One of the great untold stories of World War II finally comes to light in this thrilling account of Torpedo Squadron Eight and their heroic efforts in helping an outmatched US fleet win critical victories at Midway and Guadalcanal. These thirty-five American men—many flying outmoded aircrafts—changed the course of history, going on to become the war’s most decorated naval air squadron, while suffering the heaviest losses in US naval aviation history.

Mrazek paints moving portraits of the men in the squadron, and exposes a shocking cover-up that cost many lives. Filled with thrilling scenes of battle, betrayal, and sacrifice, A Dawn Like Thunder is destined to become a classic in the literature of World War II.

  • “Dick Hill gives this work an excellent reading. He easily performs the narrative and without missing a beat switches to a quote with an appropriate and believable accent, and then goes back to the narrative. His expressive and easygoing manner makes the art of narration seem effortless.”

  • “An admirable history of the Torpedo Squadron Eight, legendary to World War II buffs…Mrazek has made painstaking use of written sources and the personal memories of surviving members of the squadron…A boon to the literature of the WWII Pacific theater and of naval aviation.”

" I had always thought Torpedo Squadron 8 was completely destroyed at the Battle of Midway. This book does of a good job of telling the story of Torpedo Squadron 8 at the Battle of Midway....and also tells about their fine work on Guadacanal. "
