Cruel miser Ebeneezer Scrooge has never met a shilling he doesn’t like…and hardly a man he does. And he hates Christmas most of all. "What praise can I offer A Christmas Carol that hasn't already been offered? It is probably the most well-known Christmas story, with countless adaptations and interpretations to its credit. Dickens' original account is likely the most enjoyable rendition of the story (except The Muppets of course). From the opening passage his prose dissolves into itself and the characters and figures of the story dance from the page. Dickens is a master of mood and tone, with a dramatic arc spanning celebration and solemnity throughout the novel. This is a book that young readers can thoroughly enjoy, although they may need a dictionary at times. Who am I kidding? I needed a dictionary in a few instances. But it is an accessible novel that stands up as not only one of the greatest Christmas stories ever told, but one of the great classics of all literature. It is a delight to read and the message at its core is no mere platitude, but a worthwhile statement on generosity and the importance of making the most of our ephemeral lives. This particular edition features beautiful illustrations to accompany the text."

" Thanks to its endless retellings in popular culture, I didn't expect this story to hold many surprises. The original (naturally) contains the standard Dickens attention to detail, and more than its share of ruminations, musings, and linguistic diversions. I wouldn't call it a "compact" tale, though, and I marvel (and wonder) at those that read the unabridged work aloud as part of their annual family traditions. All the years of rewrites have taken out some of the sagging portions of the story, and injected new imagery in place of Dickens' original -- modern tales are generally paced better, and Scrooge's transformation at the end happens more publicly and less privately. What I found more interesting, though, was finding those snippets of dialogue or description in the text that I was familiar with from other sources, and realizing how close (or far) those sources deviated from the original material. There's no real surprises here, but it's still a classic. "

" What's there to say? I'm performing in this play and thought I would read the source material. I remember reading this in the 5th grade -- it is quite the short story. I was curious what the original was like compared to all the adaptions I've seen on film/screen. But it's just the straightforward. Except for some longer descriptive paragraphs, it's just the story we all know and love. "

" Great over Christmas; full of good feeling at the end. The best lines are in all the movies for a reason. Still, I prefer it retold in the movies, or orally condensed in a reading. Dickens meanders at times, even in this small book. "

He will be visited by three Christmas spirits; spirit of the 1. past, 2. present, and 3. future; and they will leave Scrooge a changed man. "

" The outline of the story of the ghosts of Christmas Past, Present and Future who come to educate the miserly misery Ebeneezer Scrooge is familiar to most. But despite the short length of this novella, the extra material that is omitted from dramatisations and the language of Dickens' descriptions still means there is something new for those who think they know the story. When it came near him, Scrooge bent down upon his knee; for in the very air through which this Spirit moved it seemed to scatter gloom and mystery." " The only other Charles Dickens novel I've read is Great Expectations. This was when I was fifteen and it was required reading in school, so it wasn't a pleasurable experience. It has only taken another thirty years to read another Charles Dickens book, but better late than never. How very different it is to read a Dickens novel when you are an adult, you really appreciate it so much more. Perhaps A Christmas Carol should have been the required reading book in school rather than the depressing and bleak Great Expectations. This was my first time to read A Christmas Carol, although like so many others, I have seen the many movie adaptations. I loved this book, it's amazing how sometimes the shortest books, contain the most important messages. "

It occured to me that it was all doom and gloom, populated by people with rather silly names. However ... earlier in 2012, I devoured and adored "Great Expectations" and was the same with "A Christmas Carol".
