"RC 2014 Every year I read a book on the list that I would have never picked up yet thoroughly enjoyed. This is that book. I disliked Ranger's Apprentice so I never picked up the Brotherband Chronicles. I can now see why this series flies off my shelves. The character development of the Herons is well-done, balancing life-lessons without sounding preachy. The only downfall is that I don't have time to read the next in the series what with the other 11 RC books I have to get done this month."

" Having only read the first two books in the Ranger's Apprentice series, I was happy to not be lost in reading this first in the Brotherband. Though there are a few references to the characters and past connections with Halt, the story could stand on its own. "

" Fun adventure story set in Skandia about seafaring men and a group of teenage boys who are training to become warriors. Sets up well at the end to be part of a series. "

" I would have enjoyed this more if it had been read by an editor first. I had a hard time understanding it in several different points in the book. I found that I focused more on the typos then on the story itself. "

" This is so stereotypical -- but I ate it up, just like I did all the Rangers Apprentice books. Even though I knew it was going to end on a cliffhanger, I was still pissed. I did like how it all came together at the end, I didn't predict it, which is good for a book like this. Likeable characters, outcasts, bullying bad guys, competitions -- it is all good. Waiting for #2! "

" Just getting started on this one. The cover caught my attention. I like the detail he provided before the story began. He laid out some shipping, boating and battle terminology for those of us not so familiar with sailing and village pillaging jargon. "

" This book was a lot better than I'd thought it would be. I can't wait til the next one comes out. I also hope that either Halt or Will (or both) make an appearence some time in this series. However, I won't be overly disappointed if they don't appear. Hal is a pretty cool character, on his own. "

" Great start to a new series by John Flanagan of Ranger's Apprentice fame. young Hal is a sort of Skandian Macgyver, always inventing and improving things. Very well done, looking forward to the next one! "

" I felt like I went into it expecting something a lot like ranger's apprentice and got something totally different. It's a fantastic book but mainly about them training. Not good if you want a read with a lot of action. Still, it was very entertaining and very relatable. "

" Labeled Book 1, this seems to be the next series following The Ranger's Apprentice. Following a boy from Skandia, I enjoyed learning nautical terms and the story is just as intriguing as those from The Ranger's Apprentice were. I guess John Flanagan has to be listed among my favorites now. "
