"Treasure Island is undoubtedly great, for its originality, master storytelling and incredibly fascinating adventures which make you bite your nails till the whole thing is over. Of course, if you really love to read about sea adventures, bloodthirsty pirates and quest for treasure, simply, you have to read this; and I must say that I was not the least sorry for reserving my time for this masterpiece, page turner, or anything you could call it. I usually condemn telling somebody the plot or what happens in a story in advance before he/she reads it. Being told, I hate equally, since it just damages the astonishment and the suspense a reader should get from the book. So I will just say, "There should not be an avid reader of adventure who has never read Treasure Island. Read it. You'll love it."
— Thimira (5 out of 5 stars)
" A fun historical sea romp, especially as an audiobook with all the "Shiver me timbers" and "arrgghh" piratey vocalizations performed to perfection by David Case. Now, on to "Silver," the recently-written followup that occurs 20 years following the original 1883 story. Heigh ho, mateys! "
— Kim, 2/20/2014" A nice book with good story line. "
— Piyush, 2/19/2014" Got a spare Sunday afternoon. Read this. You are never too old to enjoy it. "
— Brent, 2/17/2014" I read this in school and like the concept. Some parts seemed slow. "
— Joe, 2/16/2014" This was a fun book to read on a cruise! The Wyeth illustrations are very interesting. "
— Meade, 2/16/2014" This book was pretty good. It was a good storyline but the literature was a bit old fashioned. I did like how they got to go to an island and look for treasure that a pirate had hid there. Some people who appreciate older literature might appreciate this book more than I did. "
— Michael, 2/16/2014" I read this book when I was younger, I enjoyed it. It's such a good one, but I only gave it three stars because it didn't intensely involved me. Maybe I was too young. "
— Caren, 2/13/2014" "...and now john silver is the man inside jim..." "
— Cylonmoon, 2/11/2014" Excitement! Intrigue! Rum! Pirates! This book was everything I hoped it would be and more. "
— Laura, 2/11/2014" The parent of all pirate books and movies. A must read for everybody who likes adventures. "
— Halla, 2/10/2014" I read this in a few hours because it was impossible to stop. What can I say? There's a reason it's a classic! "
— Angela, 2/9/2014" My first time reading this classic, and it was definitely a fun one. Jim Hawkins is living a normal life at his family's inn when an unusual stranger with a gruesome scar across his face comes to stay. So begins an incredible adventure, where Jim must come into his manhood amongst blood thirsty pirates and a fight for buried treasure. Even today, Stevenson's narration reads easy and fast, with action from the beginning to the end. It would've been nice to have a little more knowledge of boats (constant references to a ship's parts went over my head), but the Barnes and Noble classic version I read did a nice job of "translating" old slang and even seamen's references in the footnotes. Good read at the end of the summer! "
— Wynne, 2/9/2014" I decided to read this because I never have and it's a classic, right? One of the last books I read referred to it (The Wednesday Wars) so I got curious and seeing as how I could get it free on my Kindle . . . why not? I enjoyed it and it was a pretty quick read. Never knew this was where Long John Silver came from! I can see how boys would love the story what with the whole buried treasure and pirate thing going on, although keeping up with all the shipping terminology could be a hindrance. I never have been able to get all those terms straight in my mind - but even in such ignorance boys will still love all the adventure and action. "
— Tintin, 2/4/2014" Alfred Molina as narrator? Great idea! "
— Kristy, 2/2/2014" This one was a bit empty for me-with a very predictable ending after all of the conflict was sorted out. The language was a welcome challenge but I would have added something: a reunion with Jim's mother, a woman, a final twist. I enjoyed it, nonetheless. "
— Maria, 2/1/2014" What a delight! Wondering why I haven't read this fun classic before now. "
— Kami, 1/31/2014" I read most of this to my son (he wanted to watch the movie and we have a rule in our house that you have to read the book before the movie). It's still on the Grade 8 reading list for school, although my son got lost in all the ship language and pirate talk. I'm sure Treasure Island paved the way for all the "talk like a pirate" movements. With a lot of "Huzzah!" and "Avast!" uttered from his lips, Long John Silver still remains one of the most fascinating and larger-than-life characters in fiction. And yes, after a fresh reading, like a child I still want to run out to my backyard, strike the Jolly Roger, and start digging in the gardens for treasures un-told. "
— Jeff, 1/31/2014" A classic pirate tale. As good as I remembered it. "
— Teri, 1/31/2014" good adventure book for younger readers:) "
— Georgie, 1/30/2014" Because I know the plot and deeper meaning of this canonical novel, I always thought I had read it. I decided to read it again before starting on Andrew Motion's "Silver" a sort of sequel to "Treasure Island." But when Jim begins to be attracted to and repelled by John Silver, I realized this was my first time reading it. It's a cracking yarn, but what is really absorbing about it, is the characterization, subtle and shifting, nobody is one-dimensional. Robert Louis Stephenson's pirate novel deserves its place in literature. "
— Vivian, 1/30/2014" I can see how people would like book, but it just wasn't for me. "
— Lindsay, 1/30/2014" Classic! We all know the story, but it was fun to actually read the book. I can see why it catches kids' (especially boys') attention. "
— Skye, 1/29/2014" I disliked it very much. Couldn't follow "
— Annabel, 1/26/2014" Amazing adventure book. Who doesn't like pirates? This timeless tale of a pirate adventure is filled with so much detail and action, you won't be able to put it down. "
— Nolena, 1/25/2014" A nice book with good story line. "
— Piyush, 1/22/2014" A fun historical sea romp, especially as an audiobook with all the "Shiver me timbers" and "arrgghh" piratey vocalizations performed to perfection by David Case. Now, on to "Silver," the recently-written followup that occurs 20 years following the original 1883 story. Heigh ho, mateys! "
— Kim, 1/19/2014" Always with a soft spot for Robert Louis Stevenson, I love this book more every time I read it. Stevenson has the visceral descriptions and actions perfect for a stage or movie adaptation. The Charleton Heston, Christian Bale version is forever locked in my memory as the beginnings of my pirate, seafaring, adventure obsessions. "
— Meghan, 1/17/2014" The one thing this book is missing is the presence of a strong, interesting female character... "
— Hilary, 1/15/2014" I just adore pirate speech. "
— Kalilah, 1/15/2014" Read it ten years ago , but I love to have it on my shelf ( as it reminds me reading with my son, soo nice) "
— Lamai, 1/14/2014" Just a ripping good yarn "
— Rhys, 1/13/2014" I did not enjoy this book, in fact it was a PAIN to read it all...but I know it influenced a bunch of pirate stories, hence the 2 stars and not 1. "
— Geneviève, 1/13/2014" Read this long ago as a child. It was an adventure back then and it's an adventure now. Great book for young people. "
— Alija, 1/11/2014" I really had a good time with this. It sure helped that I am familiar with a dew of the adaptations so the charicatures were so clear to me. But interesting to see the dramatic license taken in some plot points. A little bit more gruesome and violent in the book. "
— Rob, 1/11/2014" Classic pirate adventure. Read it. Now "
— Capnniknak, 1/10/2014" Shiver me timbers... a good book. "
— Robin, 1/9/2014" What a delight! Wondering why I haven't read this fun classic before now. "
— Kami, 1/5/2014" A swashbuckling tail for boys! "
— Allison, 1/1/2014" A young boy finds a treasure map from an old sailor living in his hotel and sets out with a group of men to find the treasure. When they reach the island it turns out that a lot of the men are pirates and that they made the rest of the crew on a mutiny so they could get the treasure for themselves. It is a race against time to get treasure and get away from the pirates. "
— Nicolas, 12/31/2013" I loved this classic adventure tale! As the mom of three sons, it was long overdue. "

— Leann, 12/24/2013" Brilliant..wish I read it as a kid.. "
— Core, 12/23/2013" Un classico senza tempo. Riletto in inglese, dopo anni, come preparazione a La vera storia del pirata Long John Silver. "
— Giuseppe, 12/23/2013" This book was the father of all pirate-stories since. Remarkably well-written, fun and lovable antagonist, and exciting adventure. In short, a childhood delight. "
— Crazymountaingoat, 12/19/2013" Kinda hard to read, but I give it 4 stars because I love Silver SO MUCH. "
— Jjlupa, 12/18/2013" De mis favoritos altamente recomendable "
— Rafael, 12/16/2013" Was visiting the islands of Thailand so it seemed appropriate. It was even more exciting than I remembered from reading as a child. "
— Maria, 12/12/2013" Who can resist adventure. This is a great story, even for the adult reader. "
— Tim, 12/1/2013" Had an audio version, and the kids didn't like the narrator's accent, so I ended up listening alone while driving. I found myself wanting to drive somewhere just so I could find out what would happen next. Loved it & so glad to have finally "read" this classic! "
— Audrey, 11/29/2013" A nice book with good story line. "
— Piyush, 11/29/2013" I read this in middle school. "
— Joseph, 11/28/2013" Thoroughly enjoyed this book start to finish. It was a quick, page-turner. Interesting to read so many common phrases from their original source. I'd rec this to anyone. "
— Elise, 11/28/2013" A bunch of pirates get drunk and stage mutiny. It's about as fun as it sounds! "
— Lucas, 11/24/2013" Listened to it to and from Trinidad, Colorado. I enjoyed it. "
— Caleb, 11/18/2013" So much more intense than any movie version I have seen of it. I really enjoyed the characters. "
— Jennifer, 11/18/2013" Still the best pirate adventure ever written "
— Janet, 11/17/2013" It's a classic; exciting in a more subtle way than current books for young readers. I did enjoy it, and don't think I had read it before. Long John Silver is bad! "
— Nancy, 10/28/2013" Read for a Leuschner class. It was okay. Students enjoy reading the short chapters. "
— Vanessa, 10/20/2013" A thrilling tale if ever there was; Long John Silver has lived up to his reputation as the cunning one-legged mutineer. "
— Perla, 10/14/2013" Who can resist adventure. This is a great story, even for the adult reader. "
— Tim, 10/6/2013" Why Oh Why Did I ever think I needed to finish this? "
— Debby, 9/24/2013" Why Oh Why Did I ever think I needed to finish this? "
— Debby, 9/18/2013" Read it back in junior high school, loved it, re-read it several times. I'm planning to read the original version this year, as well. A masterpiece and a true classic. "
— Florin, 9/11/2013" Just re-read this for the third or fourth time, and it's still as good as I remember. What was surprising to me was how much of the story I'd forgotten - it was almost like I was reading it for the first time. "
— Steve, 8/21/2013" I was about 10 years old when I read this great story. It was really scary to me back then! "
— Alan, 8/21/2013" I had never read this book, and recently decided to pick it up. Absolutely loved it! Wished I would have read it when I was younger. There are so many references to this book, i.e., characters, events, sayings. I hope I can convince my boys to read it, they would love it. "
— Lissettegomezarevalo, 8/19/2013" A classic of escapist literature! I love the use of language to really draw you in to the story. Great weekend read to get out of your head for a little bit. "
— Carla, 8/16/2013" I read this in grade school. The story grabs you and holds you from beginning to end. "
— Lucer131, 7/19/2013" I read it as a class-book, so it may have taken away from the book, but it was nothing special. Granted it was funny at points, but... "
— Tom, 7/17/2013" So that's how Long John Silvers got its name! "
— Kareem, 7/3/2013" I highly recommend the audiobook of Treasure Island read by Alfred Molina. He does excellent pirate voices. "

— Graham, 6/20/2013" This is an adventure story that defines all others. "
— Tevilla, 5/21/2013" Easy to see why this is a classic. "
— Stacey, 5/17/2013" I find it interesting that this is the story Stevenson is most known for. It's not my favourite by any means and I think "Black Arrow" and "David Balfour" would so much better on screen. Having said that there is no denying this is a classic that has shaped most of our ideas about pirates. "
— Mary, 5/12/2013" If I could just figure out what the theme was I might give it 5 stars. "
— Caw, 5/3/2013" This just was not the book for me. I absolutely LOVED Long John Silver, but he wasn't in the book nearly as much as I hoped. All the other characters were just boring in comparison. "
— Kusanar, 4/22/2013" Oo arr, enough to make me want to cock a hat and sail the high seas again in my kayak. "
— Karl, 4/20/2013" Just as I remembered it. As I read, my mind kept drifting back to the 1990 Treasure Island with Heston and Bale "
— Alicia, 4/20/2013" Just a ripping good yarn "
— Rhys, 4/13/2013" I wish I had read this as a kid! I'll definitely enjoy reading it to my own in the future. However, it was very much a children's book for me, a wonderful story but not quite as swashbuckling as I would have liked. "
— Grace, 4/12/2013" This was one of the first books I ever read just for fun. I loved it then and had such fond memories I read it again. I still love it. "
— Sara, 4/6/2013" A fine example of the story-tellers art. Lots of graphic description and keeps moving at a goodly pace. A great read "
— Richard, 3/16/2013" I loooooooooooove this book! And I think anyone who wants to write a book, should come to Treasure Island first to see how it's done! "

— Author234, 3/2/2013" that was fun. one forgets how iconic a book it is. yo-ho-ho me hearties... "
— Lee, 2/28/2013" C'mon, who hasn't wanted to be a pirate? The rum is plentiful, you get to sing sea shanties, and best of all "X" always marks the spot! The classics, my friends, are truly worth reading. Yo Ho Ho Ho a pirate's life for me...wait, wrong franchise. "
— Paul, 2/24/2013" It's a classic; exciting in a more subtle way than current books for young readers. I did enjoy it, and don't think I had read it before. Long John Silver is bad! "
— Nancy, 2/22/2013" Es gibt wohl keine bessere Geschichte mit Piraten. Vor allem Long John Silver fand ich unheimlich stark "
— Thorsten, 1/3/2013" This book was an enthralling classic. As I read through, I began to see how many contemporary works are influenced by this story. Every chapter which I read, heretofore unnoticed homages, references, and adaptations seemed to jump into my consciousness. "
— Tim, 12/12/2012" Written really well, just not my favorite kind of story... "
— Chantal, 11/26/2012" Although it was really difficult to read, I quite enjoyed reading this book. "

— Glimmerofhope, 11/4/2012" Wonderful story from my youth. "
— Julie, 10/3/2012" A lot of fun. I can see how it set the tone for the pirate genre that came after it. "
— Justin, 9/18/2012" This must be the inspiration for Pirates of the Caribbean -- the ride, if not the movies. The narrative is at an older child's level but the story still compels. Aar! "

— Verna, 8/12/2012" Very creative, keeps you interested!! "

— Jeff, 7/6/2012" Treasure Island is an enjoyable read but not the best of it's class. It does have all the necessary pirate conventions, however, so shiver me timbers Mate, and give it a try!! Fifteen men on a dead man's chest Yo Ho Ho and a bottle of rum!! "
— Cassandra, 6/9/2012" Can't believe I didn't read this childhood classic until middle-age. What a great adventure story it is! "
— Aaron, 6/7/2012" Younger readers may be put off by the older style of this book and the leisurely way in which it begins. It's worth a read. Pirates, treasure maps, friendships, treachery, and peculiar old hermits. What more could you ask of a book? Oh, and yes, Long John Silver! "
— Robin, 5/6/2012" One of my favorite reads from childhood, and one that helped instill a life-long love of reading. "
— Brian, 4/26/2012" I loooooooooooove this book! And I think anyone who wants to write a book, should come to Treasure Island first to see how it's done! "
— Emily, 3/22/2012" This was an historical fiction that was very interesting to read. it was about a boy that was filling his life long dream of being on the ship with Columbus. This would be a good book to use in the classroom to show students how life on the ship was like "
— Abbey, 2/23/2012" Everytime I read this book I am glad I did. "
— Lawrence, 1/1/2012" It was a brief read, but I really liked it. Maybe,if I'd read it when I was younger,I'd be far more exited, but all in all- it was good. I think younger readers will enjoy it very much :):) "
— Hristina, 12/15/2011" Interesting as a first person account. Kind of felt rushed at the end, though it is the oldest book I've read in which the author gives a bit of information about what happens to the characters after the story ends. I like this in movies, and it was fun to find it in this book. "
— Abby, 11/20/2011" For a book about piracy, murder, and mutiny, this book was very boring. "
— Amyanne, 11/12/2011" Very creative, keeps you interested!! "
— Whitty, 10/26/2011" I just re-read this since my 4th grade class is reading it. Lots of action, great classic. It was fun to see my reluctant readers get interested in the story. "
— Andrea, 10/5/2011" You can flip to any page of this poetic book, start reading, and within a sentence or two it has you hooked and fully immersed. Iconic characters, like a myth. "
— Bill, 8/29/2011" Liked it, but thought it could have been better "
— Author234, 8/15/2011" It wasn't the worst book I've read but entirely predictable and unrealistic. Granted, fiction novels are typically predictable, this one just became a bore. "
— Jackie, 8/15/2011" This was not my kind of book. I remember loving Kidnapped as a kid, so I'm not sure what it is I don't like. "
— Katie, 8/1/2011" If I could just figure out what the theme was I might give it 5 stars. "
— Caw, 6/18/2011" Another "classic" that I will soon forget. "
— Alex, 6/8/2011" Fun little story says I, but don't make me walk the plank when I confess that this classic was the tiniest bit boring. Not near enough swashbuckle, and holy abrupt ending :) "
— Becky, 6/1/2011" This is such a cool read! Pretty exciting stuff! OK sometimes the old school english and pirate speak are hard to understand but that's part of the fun. "
— Jacqui, 5/25/2011" Very good adventure book that everyone should read. The conflict between the pirate and the lawman arise. I for one am a lawman. "

— Namiko, 5/24/2011" I had never read this story even it is very famous. I realized that this story affects many people. That reminds me of "One piece," and "The pirates of Caribbean." "
— Namiko, 5/23/2011" I had never read this story even it is very famous. I realized that this story affects many people. That reminds me of "One piece," and "The pirates of Caribbean." "

— Namiko, 5/23/2011" It's a classic, and I did enjoy it. Some of the "sea talk" was a tad hard to understand and the vocabulary is a little antiquated. Other that that, it is a great adventure! "
— Kari, 5/22/2011" An enduring classic for very good reasons! It was well worth reading again 50 years later. "
— Linda, 5/21/2011" An enduring classic for very good reasons! It was well worth reading again 50 years later. "

— Anne, 5/16/2011" Better late than never I suppose. While searching the library bookshelf for Bram Stoker's Dracula, I came across this instead. Though it is meant to be enjoyed by those around age ten, I found it exciting from start to finish. I'll put it on my list of things to read to my kids at bedtime. "
