Her collection of humorous essays, Please Don’t Eat the Daisies was a bestseller and was adapted into a film starring Doris Day and David Niven. It was also later adapted into a sitcom. Her play, Mary, Mary ran for over a thousand performances, and for a time, held the record for the longest running non-musical play on Broadway. It was later adapted into a film starring Debbie Reynolds.
