Britton Rainstar never knew he could love a woman as deeply as he does Manuela Aloe and be so terrified of her at the same time. It's not just that he thinks she's out of his league. It's more that the longer he stays with her, the closer to death he seems to come. A vicious dog is somehow let loose in his hotel room. He's threatened at gunpoint by a man in a skeleton costume. And when he finally ends up in the hospital, someone pushes his wheelchair down the stairs.
Nothing anything like this has ever happened to Britt before--and while Manuela's never around when the so-called "accidents" happen, neither can Britt prove she's behind the many threats on his life. Is a rival for Manuela's affections trying to chase him away? Is there more to Manuela herself than meets the eye? Whatever it is, Britt better find out fast--before whoever's after him hits their mark, and the man who never thought he'd land the ultimate girl ends up paying the ultimate price.

"Like Clint Eastwood's pictures it's the stuff for rednecks, truckers, failures, psychopaths and professors ... one of the finest American writers and the most frightening, [Thompson] is on best terms with the devil. Read Jim Thompson and take a tour of hell."
— The New Republic
“The Rip-Off has a comedic tilt as Britt Rainstar’s life is turned upside down after meeting the luscious Manuela Aloe. Thompson is always a fun ride.”
— Library JournalThe best suspense writer going, bar none.
— The New York TimesMy favorite crime novelist-often imitated but never duplicated.
— Stephen KingIf Raymond Chandler, Dashiell Hammett and Cornell Woolrich would have joined together in some ungodly union and produced a literary offspring, Jim Thompson would be it...His work...casts a dazzling light on the human condition.
— Washington PostThe master of the American groin-kick novel.
— Vanity FairThe most hard-boiled of all the American writers of crime fiction.
— Chicago Tribune" Another irresistibly mindless Jim Thompson novel. They so run together . . . "
— Marian, 4/26/2013" The good news is that it's a quick read. As a stand alone book, it's not as bad as you'll hear. When compared against Thompson's greater works, it's pretty forgettable. "
— Bobby, 2/28/2013" Quick, fun read. Very visual, you can imagine a movie. Weak ending. "
— Jim, 10/17/2012" A lesser work by one of my favorite writers. "
— Ed, 9/22/2012Jim Thompson (1906–1977) was born in Anadarko, Oklahoma. He began writing fiction at a very young age, selling his first story to True Detective when he was only fourteen. He eventually wrote twenty-nine novels, all but three of which were published as paperback originals, and two screenplays, for the Stanley Kubrick films The Killing and Paths of Glory. An outstanding crime writer, he created a world of fiction rife with violence and corruption. In examining the underbelly of human experience and American society in particular, he was both philosophical and experimental. Several of his novels have been filmed by American and French directors, resulting in classic noir such as The Killer inside Me, After Dark My Sweet, and The Grifters.
