Suspended from his job with the LAPD, Harry Bosch must face the darkest parts of his past to track down his mother's killer . . . even if it costs him his life.
Harry Bosch's life is on the edge. His earthquake-damaged home has been condemned. His girlfriend has left him. He's drinking too much. And after attacking his commanding officer, he's even had to turn in his L.A.P.D. detective's badge. Now, suspended indefinitely pending a psychiatric evaluation, he's spending his time investigating an unsolved crime from 1961: the brutal slaying of a prostitute who happened to be his own mother.
Even after three decades, Harry's questions generate heat among L.A.'s top politicos. And as the truth begins to emerge, it becomes more and more apparent that someone wants to keep it buried. Someone very powerful...very cunning...and very deadly.
Edgar Award-winning author Michael Connelly has created a dark, fast-paced suspense thriller that cuts to the core of Harry Bosch's character. Once you start it, there's no turning back.

"I'm going through this Bosh series all out of order LOL So this is an early book comainred to others I read. Interesting to find out the background "gossip" that later books referred to. This story held up as well as the others I've enjoyed bt Connolly. This one focused on the story of his mom. His relationship with her has been a strong shaping piece of his history that comes up in almost every story. I like Harry Boshe more and more with every story I read."

" this one I could visualize, because growing up with coyotes eating my cats one by one, these triksters are both a sign of the wild and the laughing sincerity of life, and of course God is a coyote,. too. "
— Scott, 2/16/2014" Poor Harry. His angst continues, this time in the form of a cold case homicide some thirty years unsolved. The emotional turmoil is ratcheted up due to the victim being none other than ... Harry's mother. I love Harry -- his perpetual bad mood, his unerring pessimism, and his core belief in right v wrong. "Everybody matters or nobody matters." It's like he's almost real. "
— Kathy, 1/12/2014" WOW!!! Michael Connelly really outdid himself on this one! There were so many twists and turns to the story that it definitely made it a serious page-turner! Out of the first 4 books of the Bosch series, this one is by far the best, making it an instant classic! "
— Darryl, 11/30/2013" I loved this book! It was nice to find out what happened to Harry's mother. Still don't love the language, but I love the Harry Bosch series! "

— Caroline, 11/15/2013" This is the best Bosch so far. This is the most important story to the development of Harry Bosch. He has been suspended for assaulting his senior officer and, while working through things with the department shrink, he decides to solve the 30 year old murder of his mother. "
— Tom, 9/28/2013" # 4 in the Harry Bosch series. Connelly has always been a satisfying read for me. This one was no exception. "

— Jim, 9/7/2013" I am glad in this book that Bosch finally closed the mystery of his mother's death. I actually got exhausted myself at the end of it...the Bosch character does that to me :) "
— Shannon, 8/18/2013" Seriously, this is the 3rd M. Connelly I have read while on vacation this week. I thought the plotlines were a bit too twisty, but overall, a fun read. "

— Suzie, 8/23/2010" Pretty good Harry Bosch book. Bosch on leave for an altercation with his Lieutenant works on solving the 30 year old murder of his mother. More introspection than others. The last coyote metaphor was a little goofy. Moderate amount of bad language. "
— Bruce, 7/22/2010" With technology advancing as such a rampant rate I too sometimes feel like "the Last Coyote". "
— Anthony, 10/3/2009" I alwasys enjoy seeing what my old friend, the maverick Harry Bosch, is up to. Good, light, entertaining mystery. "
— Joan, 6/27/2009" This has been my favorite Harry Bosch novel to date. It was an "I can't put it down" read. "
