Edred and Elfrieda Arden belong to an ancient noble family which has fallen on hard times. Orphaned and living with their aunt who takes in lodgers at the seaside, life is dull and frustrating. But when Edred suddenly inherits the title of Lord Arden and a medieval ruined castle to go with it, the adventures are only just starting.
The children discover a magic spell through which they meet the Mouldiwarp—a white mole who is also the emblem of the Ardens. They learn of a hidden treasure and discover powerful magic which allows them to travel back into the past to search for it. One adventure follows another, as they encounter smugglers, highwaymen, plotters, prisoners in the tower, kings, and witches … until finally they discover the treasure, which turns out not to be what they had expected, but much much better.

"I really enjoyed this book. It took me back to the kinds of stories I enjoyed so much as a kid. One slight downside was that I knew from the start what was going to happen at the end, and one subplot that didn't resolve, and probably could have. It was a sweet story despite that."

" Really cute children's book that reminded me of Half-Magic. "
— Alayna, 1/6/2014" Great kids fantasy book! "
— Rick, 11/2/2013" Different from the Treasure Seekers but so enjoyable. Very magical. I wish we had more children's authors that wrote like this today. "
— Stacy, 10/27/2013" Although sometimes the form of the language that they use is different from today's and can be difficult to understand, it still had a very interesting plot and climax. "
— Amber, 10/2/2013" Sweet. I wish my house had a secret room behind a panel. "
— Lauren, 9/22/2013" This is a cute book, but I did like the Treasure Seekers better. "
— Krisette, 7/14/2013" I enjoyed the stories with the time travel but the authors prose is a bit dated. But the book is over one hundred years old and still a good read. "
— Beth, 12/18/2012" Wow, another fun book from the NY Review Children's Collection! My favorite so far in the collection. Written in 1907 so 100 years ago, but the style is contemporary and the plot is darling. Reminds me of Edward Eager's children's books (eg, Half Magic). "
— Sharri, 9/2/2012" Entertaining by turns but the overall narrative is choppy and oddly concluded. "
— Fang, 8/17/2012Edith Nesbit (1858–1924) lived in England and had dreamed of becoming a poet since she was fifteen years old. After her husband fell ill, it was up to her to support her small family. For the next nineteen years, she wrote novels, essays, articles, poems, and short stories; but it was not until 1899, when The Story of the Treasure Seekers was published, that she achieved great success. Her groundbreaking style of depicting realistic, believable children quickly gained a popularity that has lasted for more than a century.
