In the third installment of Emily Brightwell’s Mrs. Jeffries series, Inspector Witherspoon enlists the help of his housekeeper Mrs. Jeffries to crack the newest whodunit: the murder of Mrs. Hodges, a woman who received the direst of predictions that very night.

Inspector Witherspoon always triumphs…but how does he do it? Even the inspector himself doesn’t know—because his secret weapon is as ladylike as she is clever. She’s Mrs. Jeffries—the determined, delightful detective, who is also Inspector Witherspoon’s housekeeper.

While death is unpredictable, the murder of Mrs. Hodges was foreseen at a spooky séance. Mrs. Jeffries may not be able to see the future in a crystal ball, but she can look into the past and put things in order to solve this haunting crime with the help of the staff at Upper Edmonton Gardens.

About the Author

Emily Brightwell was born in the Appalachian mountains of West Virginia. Her family moved to Southern California in 1959 and she grew up in Pasadena. After graduating from CSU Fullerton, she decided to work her way around the world and started in England. She didn’t get any further because she met her future husband there, got married, and moved back to California. While living in Long Beach, she decided to pursue her dream and be a writer—despite having two children and a full-time job. She began the Mrs. Jeffries series in 1993 and has written thirty-three more mysteries in the series in the following twenty-one years. Now that her children are grown and have left home, Emily and her husband live in the Bay Area.
