For twenty-five years, Robert Crais has written extraordinary novels of crime and suspense. He is “a master of crime fiction” (Associated Press); “his novels get better with every new book” (Portland Oregonian); “Crais is hands-down the world’s greatest crime writer” (The Huffington Post).
But in Suspect, he may have written his most remarkable novel of all.
LAPD cop Scott James is not doing so well, not since a shocking nighttime assault by unidentified men killed his partner Stephanie, nearly killed him, and left him enraged, ashamed, and ready to explode. He is unfit for duty—until he meets his new partner.
Maggie is not doing so well, either. The German shepherd survived three tours in Iraq and Afghanistan sniffing explosives before she lost her handler to an IED and sniper attack, and her PTSD is as bad as Scott’s.
They are each other’s last chance. He was a young cop on the rise, she was bred to guard and protect. Now they are shunned and shunted to the side. They are suspect. And together they will set out to investigate the one case that no one wants them to touch: the identity of the men who murdered Stephanie.
Nine months and sixteen days later, they remained free. They were still out there.
What they begin to find is nothing like what Scott has been told, and where it will lead them will take them both through the darkest moments of their own personal hells. Whether they will make it out again, no one can say.
Thrilling, emotional, intense, with some of the best characters and well-crafted writing in all of crime fiction, Suspect is further proof that “Crais just keeps getting better” (Publishers Weekly).

"I love dogs, so this story had an immediate leg-up. And police procedurals are a favorite; although it seems so many are set in LA! I just wish some of the characters had more spice. The writing was easy to read, but not gripping. Maybe 3.5 stars is more accurate."

“Although Scott is a good guy who brings high-grade skills to his detective work, it’s Maggie who holds us captive, enthralled by Crais’ perceptive depiction of her amazing capacities.”
— New York Times Book Review“An intense, fast-paced, and thrilling page turner.”
— CNN.com“Action packed, deeply touching, and sure to be one of the best-written and most original crime novels of the year.”
— Associated Press“An emotional masterpiece. Suspect is without a doubt Crais’ best novel to date.”
— Author magazine“The most multifaceted and appealing new protagonist in crime fiction this year just may turn out to be a dog—and a hard-boiled dog, to boot…We become singlemindedly obsessed with the safety of this beautiful, sensitive, and stunningly intelligent animal, much as Maggie lives to protect and please Scott. Crais take us inside Maggie’s head—and, even more, her remarkably sensitive nose—but always in the most believable of terms (this is no talking-dog cozy). A read-in-one-sitting thriller, plot- and character-driven in equal measures.”
— Booklist (starred review)“[A] stand-alone crime thriller…[and] tale of redemption.”
— Publishers Weekly“A pleasingly perplexing storyline fresh from the headlines. The heroine of the piece is Maggie, a three-year-old German shepherd on her second deployment as a patrol and bomb-sniffing dog…The story takes in vast swaths of Los Angeles in all its multicultural glory, with baddies in the drug and diamond and policing businesses alike. And it's oddly affecting, with Crais ably capturing the bond between humans and canines without veering into sentimentality. A solid, muscular thriller, well spun.”
— Kirkus Reviews“There’s no doubt that this is one of Crais’ best. Teamed with MacLeod Andrews’ narration, it will bring tears to listeners’ eyes…Andrews’ sensitive reading makes you want to finish the book in one listen. His accents are great, and his pacing is deliberate. Do dogs dream and have feelings? Crais believes they do. Winner of AudioFile Earphones Award.”
— AudioFile" A great dog story with a happy ending. "
— Shirl, 2/17/2014" Read this book if you love dogs and want to learn more about dogs in combat situations and Crais' description of all the things dogs do for us. Don't read this if you want a fresh thriller; all the elements of the actual plot are pretty tired: crooked cops, an investigator whose bumbling sets off alarms, the abduction of the female cop who believes in our hero, etc. And from the first page you know who the real hero of the final showdown will be. That said, I do love dogs and enjoyed the interaction between Scott, the wounded cop, and Maggie, the wounded dog. What a great dog! "
— Pamela, 2/9/2014" Awesome story! Absolutely loved it! The bond between injured dog and injured cop was wonderfully developed. They kept my interest throughout the whole story. I would highly recommend this story to those looking for a great mystery. "
— Tina, 2/7/2014" This was my first Crais novel, and I was worried about chapters narrated by a dog. But I did not need to worry. It was a solid suspense read with good main characters. My only wish: deeper characters. "
— Rochelle, 1/31/2014" Good audiobook for the road "
— Tara, 1/28/2014" Good, not great. Entertaining, but a little too "pat". Ending predictable, but I just love dog stories! "
— Pamela, 1/23/2014" The characters are a departure from the author's norm but a highly entertaining effort by Mr. Crais "
— Charles, 1/16/2014" Awesome book! Didn't want to put it down. Took me four days to read because I had to sleep, eat and go to work! "
— Bobbi, 1/16/2014" A very moving story, I loved it. "
— Tracy, 1/7/2014" Nice change of pace from Elvis and Joe. Held my attention and I enjoyed Maggie's insights. Bring them back Robert; good characters. "
— Larry, 12/30/2013" Excellent change for Mr. Crais. The story of officer and dog, with the occasional insertion of the dog's canine perceptions and amazing senses was engaging. I really appreciated the insight of that POV and the heart it brought to this book. "
— Randy, 12/27/2013" Injured Marine canine pairs up with injured deputy - they help one another heal - good story - fast read "
— Judy, 12/8/2013" Great book! A nice twist with the K9 addition (and the world from the dog's point of view). Hope there's a sequel. "
— Donna, 11/17/2013" 3.5 stars -- a good, pretty suspenseful story. Crais handled shifting the points of view nicely, and the mutually healing relationship of man and dog was convincing and warm. "
— Natalie, 9/26/2013" If you love dogs and like mysteries this book is for you! "
— Peter, 9/4/2013" Loved it!! Thank you Robert Crais! Great new characters. "
— Lapdog, 8/8/2013" Excellent book! I highly recommend it! "
— Sue, 8/6/2013" Too short!!! I'm sure we will see more from these characters. "
— Adelaide, 6/21/2013" Outstanding thriller read! Perhaps it was the dog character - but I really enjoyed this. Actually, it makes me want to own a dog again. "
— Michelle, 6/4/2013" Blew through this in 2 days. A very enjoyable read..different from Elvis and Joe Pike..now we have Scott and Maggie the dog. I loved getting her perspective on things :) "
— Charisse, 5/10/2013" Disappointing... I was hoping Crais was creating a new tough as nails character, but instead Crais created another Turner & Hooch, K-9, or Top Dog that I read (skimmed when the story started boring me).. "
— Steve, 5/5/2013" My first book by this author. Good interplay between two PTSD sufferers-- a patrolman and a military working dog. If Crais continues with these characters, I'm on board. "
