Dave Gurney, retired NYPD homicide investigator, is back in Shut Your Eyes Tight, the sequel to the international bestseller Think of a Number Dave Gurney, a few months past the Mellery case that pulled him out of retirement and then nearly killed him, is trying once again to adjust to his country house’s bucolic rhythms when he receives a call about a case so seductively bewildering that the thought of not looking into it seems unimaginable—even if his beloved wife, Madeleine, would rather he do anything but. The facts of what has occurred are horrible: a blushing bride, newly wed to an eminent psychiatrist and just minutes from hearing her congratulatory toast, is found decapitated, her head apparently severed by a machete. Though police investigators believe that a Mexican gardener killed the young woman in a fit of jealous fury, the victim’s mother—a chilly high-society beauty—is having none of it. Reluctantly drawn in, Dave is quickly buffeted by a series of revelations that transform the bizarrely monstrous into the monstrously bizarre. Underneath it all may exist one of the darkest criminal schemes imaginable. And as Gurney begins deciphering its grotesque outlines, some of his most cherished assumptions about himself are challenged, causing him to stare into an abyss so deep that it threatens to swallow not just him, but Madeleine, too.

"This is the second book I have read by Verdon and it has moved him into my list of must read authors. The plot was intricate and fascinating. I love a book that really makes me stop and THINK. This book is also the second to feature Dave Gurney, retired former NYPD Detective. I also became intrigued with his home life including his somewhat complicated, however, entirely realistic, relationship with his wife Madeline. A great read, very different from the norm. Can't wait to get my hands on his next novel."

" Wasn't as good as the first one... Seemed to drag on "
— Tami, 2/9/2014" I enjoyed this book so much more than the first Dave Gurney novel. This book made me believe that Dave, his wife, and their marriage might actually have some hope. Great story and so twisted. "
— Frankie, 1/15/2014" The two Verdon novels, Think of a Number and Shut Your Eyes Tight, are two of the very best books I've ever read. The central plot of each is amazing and the twists and turns Verdon adds are tremendous. Verdon keeps you interest at every point. He does a great job of building each character and offers a lot of character introspection, which I normally don't like but Verdon does it very, very well. Superb books, both of them. "
— Steve, 1/15/2014" It's not a great book but an interesting reading. It has well-defined characters, fast dialogues and a clever story. All of this make you reading it quickly but this time I think Verdon ends it very fast and doesn't explain with details all the misunderstandings. "
— Jeraviz, 1/13/2014" Another murder, another mysterious killer and another great summer read. "
— Joanne, 12/22/2013" There was a lot to keep track of in this book - some of it was too confusing. I found some of the police blundering and oversights a little hard to believe. That said, I'll try the third one so it couldn't be all bad! "
— Ilyssa, 11/30/2013" I really like the way Verdon handles a mystery. However, I would give it a higher rating if the language was less crude. "
— Pam, 11/27/2013" Another great book by Verdon. "
— David, 11/20/2013" what an insanely crazy messed up stories with so many twists and turns it was hard to keep straight. Very good. "
— Brooke, 11/20/2013" I like books that keep me guessing, and this was one of those. It was a little gruesome at times, but I would definitely recommend it. "
— Marydawnschuck, 10/18/2013" Un pelin rapido el final, como me paso con el anterior. Unas decenas de paginas mas y la cosa hubiera ido mejor. Pero muy recomendable por supuesto. "
— David, 9/3/2013" the plot could be a little confusing if you stop and start a lot. Well written with lots of interesting plot twists to keep one guessing! "
— Kim, 5/17/2013" This book is really good, thanks to John Verdon. But this one isn't amazing as much as Think of A Number. "
— Hatice, 9/26/2012" Another good read by John Verdon. "
— Lorraine, 12/3/2011" Great suspense with a fine twist. A little graphically violent; not for the squeamish. "
