Forget everything you ever knew about unicorns. The fluffy, sparkly, friendly “horses” so popular the world over don’t exist. Real unicorns are killers.
Beasts the size of elephants, with cloven hooves that shake the earth, hides impervious to bullets, and horns that contain a deadly poison, unicorns can outrun a sports car and smell a human from a mile away.
And they can only be killed by virgin warriors descended from Alexander the Great.
Sixteen-year-old Astrid Llewelyn has grown up with her mom Lilith’s tall tales about unicorns and their exalted family heritage, but figures her mom’s crazy. But the scary stories her mom told her about the monsters in her formative years left her with a firm phobia about unicorns, even the cutesy kind popular with young girls.
But when one of the monsters attacks her boyfriend in the woods—thereby ruining any chance of him taking her to prom—Astrid finds herself headed to Rome to train as a unicorn hunter.
“As swift and sure-footed as a killer unicorn, Rampant weaves a vibrant new mythology from venerable threads.”—Scott Westerfeld, bestselling author of the Uglies series

"LOVED this book! Not only is it a fun and engaging story with fantastic, flawed, realistic characters (and more than one or two of those), but the book tackles some important and sensitive issues (especially for young women) regarding identity and expression. I highly recommend this book, even if you aren't a young adult, even if you dislike fantasy, even if you think unicorns are stupid. In fact, I can't wait to read everything else this author has ever written!"

" I just don't have much to say about Rampant. Man-eating unicorns, virgin huntresses, and...I don't know. I don't know if the world-building failed me, or if it was just too far out there for me to really appreciate the story. If it had been a full-on fantasy novel instead of one set in the present day, maybe I could've suspended my disbelief. Anyway, it was okay, but not great. For me. "
— Bethany, 1/28/2014" What a great new take on Unicorns and a great development on the story line. I don't like Lilith so much and I think she is a little too quick to release her obsessive ways. But the rest of the story got better and better. I'm starting on the next one immediately! "
— Juanita, 12/22/2013" A better idea than an actual story, but clever, and well enough written to be enjoyable. Has an interesting frankness with respect to physical and emotional trauma, and while not squeamish with the gore (get it, cause the unicorns gore people?) it presents characters with a range of realistic responses to this. "
— Jonathan, 11/28/2013" Killer unicorns...and it actually worked! Wow. 4 stars or 5, I can't decide. However I can say with conviction that UA fiction is by far the most f u n . "
— Dee, 7/8/2013" Ummmmmmm, interesting. Killer Unicorns. Took a little bit to get into, but I enjoyed the storyline once I did. Even if it is a little far fetched. "
— Kara, 6/27/2013" I really enjoyed this, except that it felt like it ended too abruptly. I felt like they an out of pages and needed to wrap it up quickly... "
— Pamlin, 4/4/2013" Really like this book a lot. Interesting twist on the whole Killer Unicorn thing. I loved Janni Lee Simner's short story about killer unicorns (different than this particular mythology) so I thought I'd take a shot with these books. Can't wait to see what happens to Astrid next. "
— Sadonna, 11/26/2012" An original book that takes place in a very magical place. Italy! I loved the whole bad unicorn thing and I'm also happy that good and bad aren't cut and dry because rarely is it so in real life. I really need to get the sequel! "
— Isabel, 11/18/2012" I liked the premise of the book, but I couldn't concentrate on the story and kept skipping a page here and there. I don't know if it was the mood I was in when I read it, or if it was a pacing issue. "
— Shawna, 11/15/2012" Once I finally managed to suspend disbelief, which admittedly took some work for me, I came around to loving this novel. I look forward to reading the sequel and the stand-alone in this universe. So -- if you can force the suspension of disbelief, I think you'll be very pleased. "
— Leta, 10/19/2012" One of my favorite books of the year. Astrid is the new Buffy! I couldn't put this book down!! "
— Kami, 9/24/2012" I'm not sure which I liked more, the idea of unicorns as blood thirsty monsters or the main character's sense of humor. I love books that make me laugh, and I got to tell ya, this was a fun read! "
— Susan, 9/4/2012" Definitely a new take on unicorns and much much better than I expected! Sometimes I read books and I know they may not be great, or they will be cheesy as all hell but I really really enjoyed this book and it's cast of characters and can't wait for more from the series! "
— Tricia, 8/5/2012" It was okay. I didn't love it and I didn't hate it. I'm just not sure. "
— Emily, 8/5/2012" Loved this book so much! "
— Aine, 7/17/2012" Killer unicorns and the girl whose destiny is to hunt them. "
