Publisher Description

Choose: A quick death... Or slow poison...

About to be executed for murder, Yelena is offered an extraordinary reprieve. She'll eat the best meals, have rooms in the palace -- and risk assassination by anyone trying to kill the Commander of Ixia.

And so Yelena chooses to become a food taster. But the chief of security, leaving nothing to chance, deliberately feeds her Butterfly's Dust -- and only by appearing for her daily antidote will she delay an agonizing death from the poison.

As Yelena tries to escape her new dilemma, disasters keep mounting. Rebels plot to seize Ixia and Yelena develops magical powers she can't control. Her life is threatened again and choices must be made. But this time the outcomes aren't so clear . .

"I literally read this book in one night. From the first page I was drawn in by Yelena and her plight as a soon-to-be-executed prisoner and her choice of becoming a poison taster or hanging. Told in first person, the story moves along quickly as Yelena tries to learn to trust again and uncovers a potential conspiracy involving outlawed magic use in the military dictatorship that has overthrown the kingdom. The characters are likable and there were more than a few twists that keep me turning the page."

" I really, really liked this book. The only thing I did find is there was a couple things that were so obvious it was frustrating that the characters didn't notice. But, all-in-all, this is an excellent book. If only certain things weren't made so obvious to the reader (might have just been me, I guess) this would have been given five stars. Definitely one of my favourite books! "

" Super happy with this book! It seemed like it was going to be really boring at the start but the action started coming and I couldn't put it down. Loved the way everything played out in the end. It was expected but surprising in the end. "

" Absolutely loved! I've read the whole series and I am about to read again once more! ***Spoiler*** Third book is very long and considering its the last in the trilogy it's a very good thing. "

" The makings of an interesting idea were present but the delivery leaves a lot to be desired. The writing is very basic and lacks any kind of depth. Once you remove the stated opening premise, all that is left is just pure fluff. "
