In this newest installment of the bestselling Prehistoric North America series, animals and humans are struggling for survival amidst massive environmental change. Mammoths, mastodons, and giant lions have become extinct, and Rain Bear, the chief of Sandy Point Village, knows his struggling Raven People may be next. One day a beautiful red-haired woman, Evening Star, stumbles into his council lodge and begs him for sanctuary. He soon learns that she's an escaped slave from the North Wind People, a Caucasoid race and the Raven People's mortal enemies. If he offers to protect her, the North Wind People will attack, but if he sends her back, Rain Bear knows Evening Star will be tortured and perhaps killed.

" All the Gears books are written as true to life as it could possibly be. I read one comment that she couldn't separate the gods from the people by name. Mother earth, sister moon, and the thunderbirds. You have to understand our beliefs. They are living gods, and referred to as such. These i believe are the best written about life in the prehistory. — Stephanie, 8/6/2013" It wasn't as interesting as some of the series, still worth a read. "
— Don, 11/7/2011" This fictional tale of very early native Americans was pretty good, but I found it somewhat confusing that the characters in the story referred to the elements as if they were people, especially since the characters names were also frequently 'earthy'. "
— Clare, 10/29/2011" This 'period book' took place 14,000 years ago in what is now the states of Washington and Oregon. The envisioned life of people's day-to-day activities needed for survival and corresponding beliefs was entertaining. "

— Theresa, 7/5/2011" Really enjoyed this one as much for the research and detail of pre-colonial America as for the story itself. Well done on both counts, and I'm off for another from the Gears. "
— Nathanael, 6/28/2011" Interesting take on the "Kennewick Man" and how it could have fit into paleo Native American society. "
