"John Wayne Cleaver is a 15 year-old sociopath. But he has rules. He is trying to control himself and prevent himself from walking down the path of all the serial killers he is obsessed with. However, a serial killer has come to his town, and as John is drawn and repulsed in equal measure. That feels like an adequate plot summary, but it doesn't really share the meat of the book. It's all about getting to know John, and he is a fascinating guy. Wells does a great job of creating a foreign perspective with enough touchstones to normalcy that it is comprehensible. The narrative voice that results is just perfect. I tore through this book about as fast as I could, and I think most people would enjoy it as well."

" Pretty hard to rate this book. For the most part it did not grip me at all. The supernatural element seems redundant, the protagonist a bit 'fake' and there is too little background for the main ideas. Yet the ending is not that bad and the book ovarall was not that bad. "

" I feel like this book is a testament to Wells' skill as a writer. It's not an easy task to cast your protagonist as a empathy-lacking sociopath and then expect your readers to relate to and empathize with said sociopath but Wells manages it brilliantly. These aren't really the kind of books I enjoy reading but I was really drawn into this story and had a hard time putting it down until I was finished. That said, I will probably not continue the series. One look into John Cleaver's brain is enough for me. "

" This was so not what I was expecting! It had been on my "to-read" list for ages and I'd really forgotten what it was supposed to be about and boy was I in for it. I'm torn between 3.5 and 4 stars so I'll go with 4 since I don't have the option for the half. The story moved along at a good pace, the characters were interesting and there were plenty of surprises along with a few predictable elements. Overall it was an enjoyable read and I'll look forward to more from Dan Wells. "

Dan Wells is the author of the Partials Sequence, as well as the John Cleaver series: I Am Not a Serial Killer, Mr. Monster, and I Don’t Want to Kill You. He has been nominated for both the Hugo and the Campbell Award and has won two Parsec Awards for his podcast, Writing Excuses. He plays a lot of games, reads a lot of books, and eats a lot of food, which is pretty much the ideal life he imagined for himself as a child.
