Dan Wells's debut audiobook, I Am Not a Serial Killer, is the first installment in a trilogy that will keep you awake and then haunt your dreams. John Wayne Cleaver is dangerous, and he knows it. He's spent his life doing his best not to live up to his potential. He's obsessed with serial killers, but really doesn't want to become one. So for his own sake, and the safety of those around him, he lives by rigid rules he's written for himself, practicing normal life as if it were a private religion that could save him from damnation. Dead bodies are normal to John. He likes them, actually. They don't demand or expect the empathy he's unable to offer. Perhaps that's what gives him the objectivity to recognize that there's something different about the body the police have just found behind the Wash-n-Dry Laundromat---and to appreciate what that difference means. Now, for the first time, John has to confront a danger outside himself, a threat he can't control, a menace to everything and everyone he would love, if only he could. Praise for the John Cleaver series: "The beauty of the prose, mixed with the depth of characterization, gives the haunting, first-person narrative a human touch. regardless of your age or your genre preferences, you will find this story both profound and enthralling.” — Brandon Sanderson, New York Times bestselling author “Brilliant! full of unforgettable characters, creepy thrills, and dangerous twists you won’t see coming.” — Jonathan Maberry, New York Times bestselling author

"John Wayne Cleaver is a 15 year-old sociopath. But he has rules. He is trying to control himself and prevent himself from walking down the path of all the serial killers he is obsessed with. However, a serial killer has come to his town, and as John is drawn and repulsed in equal measure. That feels like an adequate plot summary, but it doesn't really share the meat of the book. It's all about getting to know John, and he is a fascinating guy. Wells does a great job of creating a foreign perspective with enough touchstones to normalcy that it is comprehensible. The narrative voice that results is just perfect. I tore through this book about as fast as I could, and I think most people would enjoy it as well."

“This dazzling, un-put-downable debut novel proves beyond a doubt that Dan Wells has the gift. His teenage protagonist is as chilling as he is endearing. More John Wayne Cleaver, please.

— Brandon Sanderson, New York Times bestselling author" One of my favourite books. "
— Charmaine, 2/14/2014" Pretty hard to rate this book. For the most part it did not grip me at all. The supernatural element seems redundant, the protagonist a bit 'fake' and there is too little background for the main ideas. Yet the ending is not that bad and the book ovarall was not that bad. "
— Jakub, 2/7/2014" superb portrayal of sociopathic behavior and mindset well written and dark with supernatural overtones. Ending falls flat and doesnt really answer the questions the book poses. Excellent storyline but not fully explored and exploited. "
— Ranald, 2/6/2014" I feel like this book is a testament to Wells' skill as a writer. It's not an easy task to cast your protagonist as a empathy-lacking sociopath and then expect your readers to relate to and empathize with said sociopath but Wells manages it brilliantly. These aren't really the kind of books I enjoy reading but I was really drawn into this story and had a hard time putting it down until I was finished. That said, I will probably not continue the series. One look into John Cleaver's brain is enough for me. "
— Yv, 1/3/2014" This was so not what I was expecting! It had been on my "to-read" list for ages and I'd really forgotten what it was supposed to be about and boy was I in for it. I'm torn between 3.5 and 4 stars so I'll go with 4 since I don't have the option for the half. The story moved along at a good pace, the characters were interesting and there were plenty of surprises along with a few predictable elements. Overall it was an enjoyable read and I'll look forward to more from Dan Wells. "
— Frankie, 12/26/2013" This is my favorite genre. So finding a book like this is a real gem in the rough. It appealed to me on so many levels, mentally, psychologically, and weirdly as well. I can hardly wait for the next installment to see how off the rails this thing will go. " the trolley to and from hell is up and running again" and what a ride it's gonna be! "
— Eyehavenofilter, 12/19/2013" One of the creepiest books I've read in a long time. Intense, and suspenseful, it really freaked me out - not because of the bad guy - the protagonist's point of view was so disturbing, I was waiting for him to snap and start killing people himself. Even now, it sends little chills down my spine. "
— Zachary, 12/18/2013" An utterly engrossing and quick read! It was really hard to put down. John Cleaver is a sad character, it's difficult to be in his head, but he is very sympathetic even if he is a sociopath. Fascinating and disturbing. "
— Tena, 12/15/2013" Pretty silly young adult fiction. I read it based on the recommendation of a fellow college alum who recommended the author as another fellow alum. Not bad, but not anything to strongly recommend either. "
— Vaughn, 11/21/2013" An absolutely fantastic book that I can't recommend in good conscience to anyone. It pulls of a genre switch halfway through, is incredibly gripping. It's pretty disturbing too ... the main character is a kid who works in a morgue and has psychopathic tendencies. "
— Brent, 10/15/2013" Entertaining, but not vital (like an organ). "
— LP, 10/4/2013" This book was amazing. I never wanted to put it down. One of the best books I have ever read. I loved the suspense! I wanted to keep reading on and on! Awesome book! "
— Danielle☼, 8/3/2013" I really enjoyed this book and can't wait to pick up the next ones! "
— Jaci, 6/19/2012" I'm almost done with this one, and I think I just read the most thrilling four pages I've ever read. I've never gotten shivers from the written word before...but these four pages were....brutally captivating. There was NO way to look away from the page! This is DEFINITELY A must read!! "
— Raven, 3/27/2012" Sometimes, peering into the bright blue heart of a dancing flame, I ask if it remembers me. "We've seen each other before. We know each other. Remember me when I'm gone." "
— Maxine, 9/15/2011" This was a great book full of great detail. Seems like a lot of work was put into writing this book.\ "
— Jesus, 8/24/2011" Once I found out about the "serial killer" I was underwhelmed and didn't really want to finish it "
— Shiya, 6/29/2011" I thought this one started off with great potential. The author clearly has done his research on sociopathic personalities. When the narrative switched from realistic to fantasy, however, he sort of lost me. Not a bad suspense novel but nothing all that great. "
— Bill, 6/20/2011" I thought this was a well written book that was hard to put down. That being said, it wasn't exactly my type of book.

If you love Dexter, you will love this book. It's pretty much him as a teenager with a little bit of fantasy thrown in. It was just a bit dark for my tastes. "
— Jessica, 6/17/2011" I was immediately sucked into this book until it turned sci-fi/fantasy. Doh! I did an audible sigh when it happened because it really dropped it a notch in my mind. But overall, I thought it was a decent book. I'll probably pick up the next one in the series eventually. "
— Sandra, 6/15/2011" Very creative. John is a very unique kid and I'm glad the story was so good.
His skills are impressive. "
— Keira, 6/9/2011" I wanted to keep reading this book but just couldn't find the time so it took me a few days to finish, but i thought it was awsome! "
— Mokieblylk, 6/8/2011" This was a very enthralling and simply written book. Very suspensful and creepy. "
— Gabriella, 6/4/2011" Completely lost track of time reading this one. Interesting story, snappy writing, though a smidge gory. I daresay it's pretty darn spiffy! "
