In the same vein as her critically acclaimed debut novel, Upstate, Kalisha Buckhanon again shares an emotionally beautiful story about today’s youth that magnifies the unforgettable power of hope and the human spirit. Buckhanon takes us to Chicago, 1992, and into the life of fifteen-year-old Shivana Montgomery, who believes all Black women wind up the same: single and raising children alone, like her mother. Until the sudden visit of her beautiful and free-spirited Aunt Jewel, Shivana spends her days desperately struggling to understand life and confront the challenges she faces growing up in a tough environment. When she accidentally becomes pregnant by an older man and must decide what to do, she begins a journey toward adulthood with only a mysterious voice inside to guide her. Then, when she falls in love with Rasul, a teenager with problems of his own, together they fight to rise above their circumstances and move toward a more positive future. Through a narrative that sweeps from slavery onward, Buckhanon unveils Shivana’s connection to a past filled with tragedy, courage, and wisdom.

"It's got great pictures (even a picture of a woman giving birth to a breech baby)! Jordan studied this book intently during my pregnancy with Leah - must have been why she wasn't grossed out at watching her being born. ;)"
— Elisa (4 out of 5 stars)
" This one is pretty good. Lots of info and pictures. "
— Becky, 8/28/2013" This book has been an essential guide to me throughout my pregnancy. I refer to the same chapter even quite frequently. I only wish there was a larger section of the book dedicated to fitness during pregnancy. "
— Crystal, 5/26/2013" If this book is correct....shyte half of the population would not be here! "
— Regina, 4/1/2011" Everyone in this book is wearing clothes so hideous that I cannot take in any of the information. Too many pictures of men with bad hair caressing the stomachs of women in smock tops. Count me out. "
— Nickie, 3/22/2011" Most depressing awful book ive ever read "
— Pipermaru2u, 1/16/2011" This book was a little far fetched and preachy. The happily-ever after message may send the wrong message to young girls in Shivana's situation. "
— Judith, 10/6/2010" So sad... the middle narrative of the babies perspective was sometimes distracting but it added an incredible voice to the novel. "
— Julia, 6/30/2010" A jumped back and forth too much. Slow at times. "
— Shatoya, 4/1/2010" Very disappointing, especially the ending.I felt the author was trying way too hard to be "literary." I mean where does Shivana come up with the word milieu? Students are not going to be on waiting lists for this one, like they were for Upstate. "
— Katy, 10/4/2009" I liked Upstate, the author's first book much better. "
