David Virden's case is simple enough: Namless must find his ex-wife and deliver some papers to her. But she refuses the papers, sends a message to Virden to never contact her again, and slams the door. His colleague, Tamara, tells Nameless that Virden threatens to sue, stops payment on his checks, and claims that the woman they located isn't his wife. Then he disappears and his fianc├®e hires Nameless to find out why. Clearly, someone is trying to make Nameless the monkey in the middle. Then things take a decidedly more deadly turn…

"Two separate story lines, both featuring people who are using some sort of "camouflage". Excellent mystery with some neat twists. As always, the familiar characters (nameless detective, Jake Runyon, Tamara)keep the interest and involvement of the reader."
— Cindy (4 out of 5 stars)
“The Nameless series continues to be a wonder of great plotting, long-term character development, and insight into the chilling banality of evil.”
— Booklist (starred review)“Can doing first-rate work as consistently as Pronzini really be as effortless as he makes it seem?”
— Kirkus Reviews (starred review)“One of the best in the mystery-suspense field.”
— Washington Post Book World, praise for the series“Pronzini is a greatly gifted storyteller who never fails to deliver topflight entertainment.”
— San Diego Union-Tribune on Fever" Another good read for me. "
— Carol, 1/20/2014" Part of the Nameless detective series, a quick read from one of my favorite mystery authors, Bill Pronzini. Interestingly, like many of my other favorite characters, Nameless is aging right into retirement...Guess I've been reading this series for 20-plus years now! "
— Jonelle, 1/8/2014" Same old, same old, but I like all the characters, and if Nameless is getting more didactic - well - his politics are my politics, so I don't really care. "
— Lynn, 1/5/2014" A quick read, always enjoyable, the Nameless Detective is a reliable companion for hurricanes and other natural disasters. "
— Kay, 12/29/2013" Wow, another powerful and creepy story from Bill Pronzini! "
— Joanna, 12/27/2013" Quick read, nicely wrapped up two story lines at the end. I'm a sucker for a quick and easy mystery. I'm sure I've read some of these before but I can't discern one from the next. The older detectives are a nice change for me. "
— Meredith, 12/25/2013" Good stories, well told by a Grand Master. The latest few in series have done a good job incorporating other regular characters (e.g. operatives at the detective agency). I probably shouldn't complain but...these are starting to feel a little "formula"/same. "
— Harvey, 12/19/2013" Good. Average read. "
— Ruth, 11/13/2013" I need to keep Pronzini in my radar he's very prolific and an excellent writer and story teller. Camouflage is an excellent fast paced novel with good, even though predictable plot twists excellent reading. "
— Michael, 10/29/2013" This is really a 2.5 stars for me. I've long enjoyed this series so I rounded up. I feel there were a couple of weak plot points in this one. Things we're asked to believe that don't quite ring true. But I still enjoyed the book and it's a quick read. "
— Mary, 7/28/2013" Another good yearn by Bill Pronzani. "
— Al, 1/23/2013" love the double plot story. Keeps you turning the pages. "
— Estelle, 7/5/2012" One of the few left-leaning liberal(politics)detectives. Two threads that aren't actually connected except by proximity.Non-the-less interesting light reading with action and believable detective procedures. "
— Mark, 12/9/2011" I liked the book immensely, but it dealt with the difficult topic of child abuse, which is always tough to read. All in all, a great book in the series :) "
— Metagion, 7/4/2011" This is the first book by Bill Pronzini that I have read and look forward to reading more of his books. Camouflage was overall a great detective story. "
