Jean-Thomas “Tomi” Ungerer is a French illustrator and a writer in three languages. He has published over 140 books ranging from much loved children’s books to controversial adult work and from the fantastic to the autobiographical. He is known for sharp social satire and witty aphorisms. Ungerer received the international Hans Christian Andersen Medal in 1998 for his “lasting contribution” as a children’s illustrator. Born in 1931 in Strasbourg, in the Alsace region of France, Ungerer now divides his time between his farm in Ireland, near the ocean that he loves, and Strasbourg, where a museum dedicated to his work opened in late 2007. |
