Publisher Description
This wasn't the way it was supposed to go.
You're just a typical fifteen-year-old sophomore, an average guy named Kyle Chase. This can't be happening to you. But then, how do you explain all the blood? How do you explain how you got here in the first place?
There had to have been signs, had to have been some clues it was coming. Did you miss them, or ignore them? Maybe if you can figure out where it all went wrong, you can still make it right. Or is it already too late? Think fast, Kyle. Time's running out. How did this happen?
You is the riveting story of fifteen-year-old Kyle and the small choices he does and doesn't make that lead to his own destruction.
In his stunning young-adult debut, Charles Benoit mixes riveting tension with an insightful—and unsettling—portrait of an ordinary teen in a tale that is taut, powerful, and shattering.
Advance praise for You:
""You is authentic, ambitious, and gripping. A serious book that reads like a suspense novel, the story it tells—of the ways in which we become imprisoned by our own choices, big and small—is both frightening and frighteningly real.""
—Lauren Oliver, New York Times bestselling author of Before I Fall
""Charles Benoit has written a shattering, gut-wrenching novel that puts You right in the center of the story. Pick it up and you won't put it down!""
—Michael Grant, New York Times bestselling author of Gone
""I sat down to start this book—and didn't get up until I'd finished it, a riveting three hours later. You is pitch-perfect: funny, real, touching, brimming with tension and foreboding—and still surprising right up to the last page. one of the best ya novels I've read in years.""
—Patricia McCormick, National Book Award finalist, author of Sold and Purple Heart
""A sandstorm of a novel, as harshly real as hell or high school. I loved it.""
—Robert Lipsyte, Margaret A. Edwards Award–winning author of The Contender and Center Field
""Wanna know who the real bad guys in your school are? Read You. This book will keep you reading, and then it will start you thinking. And talking. You is good stuff.""

"If you aren't sure what second-person narration looks like, check out this book. The main character here, Kyle, is telling the story but in second person, ie. using the term "you" to tell what's happening. It seems strange at first and has bothered me in the few other books I have read narrated in this perspective, but this story is so fast-paced that after awhile I barely noticed the point of view at all. I liked this book for a couple of reasons: first, it should appeal to an under-served audience - teenaged boys who don't necessarily enjoy reading, and second: it's a really fast read with enough mystery and suspense to keep readers engaged. Basically Kyle is your classic HS under-achiever just going through the paces. Then he meets a new kid, Zach. Zach's funny and smart but mysterious, and Kyle is both flattered and surprised by his attention. Their friendship soon takes a turn, however, and that is where the suspense builds. I don't want to say too much more except that I thought this was definitely worth my time!"

" Tis book was pretty good. Weird but good. It was written like you were the main character. "
— Megan, 2/10/2014 -
" The author's use of second person point of view makes for a distressing tale;you're unhappy with your choices and you can't escape your fate. "
— Liz, 2/8/2014 -
" So I really wanted to give this book four stars, but I just couldn't. It was a fast read and great content for teens--especially teen males, a tough to recommend to demographic. Unfortunately, I also felt like it tried to be edgy--and came up a little short. Also, I felt like I got left hanging. Some of that is admittedly my desire for closure, but I think in trying to get "you," the reader, to truly feel the part of the protagonist, the author didn't want to dive too deep into the main character's pysche, lest you feel a disconnect and then the entire "you" effect is lost. Despite all that, this will be one of my new fav recs for teens--tweens, even--and I can't wait to hear what inspired the author! "
— Jessie, 2/3/2014 -
" Kinda depressing, but a really interesting writing style. The point of view makes it even stranger. Not giving it 2 stars because its poorly written, but because it just was not the ending I'd envisioned "
— Ellen, 2/2/2014 -
" Written in the second person. Really gripping. "
— Amy!, 1/27/2014 -
" I don't know, but I really like this book. I probably should've gave it a 4 star instead, but IDK. It was just really interesting! I'm kind of sad with the ending, but I still think it was good. Zack made it good(: "
— *Mrs., 1/27/2014 -
" Deeply disturbing, but a must read for teenagers. It shows the progression of how one poor choice can lead to others and ultimately destroy you. I could not put it down! Charles Benoit is a master storyteller. "
— Shannon, 1/25/2014 -
" What a great book! Such a gripping story! Couldn't put it down.....surprising all the way to the end! "
— Jennifer, 1/20/2014 -
" Nice twist! I read this in just a few hours, I couldn't put it down. "
— Angela, 1/17/2014 -
" fascinating book. reminded me of shattering glass by gail giles. and you know what? not one swear word! 2010 has been a good year for adult authors trying their hand at YA. (looking at you Ship Breaker) "
— Joanna, 1/16/2014 -
" Fast read. The perspective was interesting as well as the character's voice. I liked the evolution of choices and consequences the character explored as he relived what got him to a defining point in his life. Very interesting read. "
— Brenda, 12/14/2013 -
" This book was okay. I didn't really like the ending, but I did like the writing style. "
— Nancy, 12/12/2013 -
" I see why the hype, though it wasn't as gut-wrenching for me as the blurbs promised. "
— Alexa, 11/23/2013 -
" I didnt overly like this book, it wasn't terrible by any means just really boring and unsatisfying and the ending was guessable but stupid, I don't really recommend reading it "
— Storm, 10/6/2013 -
" It has a good message, but could have been conveyed slightly different...ending is depressing and kinda is a whole lead up to depression... Intriguing told in second person...not my cup of tea! :( "
— Hansini, 3/28/2013 -
" This is a book I received through First Reads. I read this in one sitting as I couldn't put it down. It is written for adolescents but as an adult I still found it gripping and as a high school teacher I found it rang all too true. "
— Cathy, 1/19/2013 -
" Good reluctant readers read! "
— Denise, 10/15/2012 -
" This is an easy read YA Fiction. During the first half of the book, I was wondering what the big deal was... then the whole choices issue finally dawned. Phenomenal ending. "
— Karen, 8/18/2012 -
" it was interesting...especially how it was in second person, and i liked how is was in a guys perspective... "
— Ishita, 11/25/2011 -
" A thought provoking read for teenagers and parents or teachers of....how would you react? What would you do?? Bringing the story into your head makes it personal. The potential to be very frigtening... "
— Elisabeth, 6/27/2011 -
" I really enjoyed this book! I love how the author makes use of second person to transform the reader into Kyle's world. The issues are relevant and mainstream. I think it would make a great teen discussion book... "
— Kelly, 6/21/2011 -
" Was on the fence between 3 and 4 stars. I "liked" it in general, and "really liked" it considering what it was/genre/age group etc. If that makes any sense.

Quick page-turner. "
— Amy, 5/15/2011 -
" Excellent choice for reluctant male readers. It kind of puts me off, though, when I think of how many of them might too readily identify with the main character. The author puts a lot of effort into establishing his "loser" bona fides. "
— TheSaint, 5/9/2011 -
" Liked the book, could relate to alot of teens "
— Jasmine, 4/24/2011 -
" Loved the narration, like it's talking to you as the main character. I'd love to do this one as a read-aloud, because the narration would be so engaging read out loud, but there are some edgier parts that give me pause. "
— Jared, 4/19/2011 -
" Tis book was pretty good. Weird but good. It was written like you were the main character. "
— Megan, 4/15/2011 -
" An oddly detached third person narrator made this a bit hard to get into and I am not sure what the ultimate message of the book is in the end. Very dark and sad...how small decisions that are bad can lead to awful consequences. "
— Amy, 4/12/2011 -
" this book was so crazy messed up "
— Sarah, 4/8/2011
