"This is Ben Aaronovitch's third book in the series, and I have enjoyed each one of them with an unseemly relish. They are of the 'can't put down' variety...and for an urban fantasy fan that rarest of treats; substantial depth of character, plots which twist unexpectedly; and a dose of humor which is never gratuitous. There is a wonderfully layered sense of place throughout. I love this series, one of my favorites in the past couple of years; and will pounce upon the next book as soon as it emerges. " Another enjoyable adventure featuring Peter Grant and his colleagues from the previous books in the series. As the title suggests, this time their investigations lead them underground, firstly into train tunnels and then into the Victorian built London sewers. I particularly like the nuggets of information about London that the author manages to insinuate into the storyline. Kobna Holdbrook-Smith's narration is excellent and he delivers a good range of accents for the various characters. "

" While this was a good book, this series is getting progressively worse (only word I can think to use although a little harsh) rather than better. THe set up was good, but the main bulk of the story fell flat for me, and I can't really remember the ending which doesn't code well. The characters are still wonderfully vivid, and their relationships are developing, but the plot was again a little meandering. I gave the first book five stars as I loved it and thought it was so original. This book is original, but the love was not there this time. I hope Aaronovitch isn't falling into the trap of getting published asap, rather than taking time over his work - which it was clear he did for the first book. The other two feel a bit of mish-mash. Will still read the next in the series as I like his style of writing and am really getting to love his characters. "

Ben Aaronovitch writes urban fantasy and science fiction novels, including more than a dozen novels and novellas in the Rivers of London series, which have been shortlisted for major awards, including the CWA Dagger in the Library award, British Book Award Page-turner of the Year Award, and the Theakston Old Peculiar Crime Novel of the Year Award. He has also contributed novels to sever of the Doctor Who series.
About Kobna Holdbrook-Smith
Kobna Holdbrook-Smith is a Ghanaian-born British actor who has appeared on stage, screen, and television. A graduate of the Guildford School of Acting, he won a Manchester Evening News Theatre Award for Best Actor in a Supporting Role for his performance in Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom.
