"This is the fifth book I have read by Deaver and the one I have enjoyed the most since The Coffin Dancer. I did not particularly like The Empty Chair and was interested in The Stone Monkey more for its content about Chinese culture than for the plot. So The Vanished Man was a nice surprise. The theme is illusion, and Deaver joins right in with his characters in tricking and misleading the reader in a way that is a lot of fun. This is not the sort of book where you will be able to "figure out" the mystery ahead of time. It is more like a fun roller coaster ride, not to be taken too seriously, but definitely to be enjoyed."

Quotes
-
“Ingeniously devious…[The] plot is so crooked it could hide behind a spiral staircase.”
— People -
“A crackling thriller.”
— Chicago Sun-Times -
“Presto! With a conjuror’s flourish, the reliable Jeffery Deaver has pulled another winner out of his hat…The book’s plotting and pacing—featuring twist upon twist and reversal upon reversal—are nothing short of dazzling, reminiscent of Agatha Christie at her best. Deaver proves himself an accomplished illusionist.”

“This is prime Deaver.”
— Publishers Weekly -
“Well-researched and exciting, this has all the elements of good crime fiction: likable leads, a colorful supporting cast, fascinating scientific analysis, and a look at the secrets of an otherwise unknown world. A sure hit.”

" The spine is broken part way through the book. I don't have a clue how to try to tape it! This is Licoln Rhyme number 5. I don't think I have number 6 here, rats. I love these and I am sometimes sad to think that I have missed them all these years. Copyright on this one is 2003. Learned alot about magic in this one. It has 806 pages in this copy. "

— jamie, 2/16/2014 -
" I love the detail that Deaver puts into his novels. I learn so much about the backgrounds of the characters and the settings. "
— Vegfamily, 2/8/2014 -
" I like this genre of book, however this one had so many twists and turns it was a tad overwhelming. And so much kept happening in such a short period of time that it almost bothered me. "
— Keely, 2/7/2014 -
" Awesome! It was a bit slow at first and therefore a bit hard to get into, but I really enjoyed it. Watching The Bone Collector first helped me visualize and feel closer to the characters; I found this a really good read!! "
— Amber, 2/2/2014 -
" Simply put, one of the best modern mystery novels I've read in a long time. The amount of twists & turns Deaver crammed into this novel borders on the astounding, the premise of a trained illusionist as a deadly criminal ever better. Just... just read it. "
— Brian, 1/27/2014 -
" This book was full of twists and turns as Lincoln Rhyme and his team track a killer with magical talent. "
— Arlene, 1/18/2014 -
" Although a little far-fetched in parts, definately my favourite Jeffery Deaver novel. Very very creative. "
— Rachel, 12/22/2013 -
" I loved the magic threaded through the book. "
— RunRachelRun, 12/12/2013 -
" Jeffery Deaver. Just a remarkable author. I'm amazed at the research he puts into his work. Who knew the world of illusion would interest me? Throw in a psychopathic killer and some terrific forensic work... voila! "
— Heather's, 12/11/2013 -
" Really liked this. He keeps twisting the plot so you never know what to believe or who the bad guy (or girl!) really is. "
— Allison, 12/3/2013 -
" The Lincoln Rhyme series is good generally, but this has been of my favorites thus far. There are many twists. Just when you think you've figured it out, there is another twist that keeps you guessing. The magician references are very interesting, and make the novel unique among mysteries I've read. "
— Laurie, 10/11/2013 -
" Lots of magic in this book - 1st 3/4 of book exciting - then it seemed to drag on. "
— Edward, 9/1/2013 -
" I enjoyed the mystery behind the magician, getting information on how they work on stage. Obviously, Deaver did his homework. I applaud that. The ending was a bit long, I skipped through it fast reading. It seemed like it could have ended earlier. But, good read. "
— Kayeann, 8/29/2013 -
" magic.. magician.. and a serial killer "
— Shanti, 7/26/2013 -
" Excellent; Continuing character: Lincoln Rhyme; trying to solve a series of murders by a magician/illusionist has the team tracking down leads and enlisting the aid of an apprentice illusionist "
— Joe, 5/9/2013 -
" Another great entry in the Lincoln Ryhmes series. I didn't quite see the twist at the end and really enjoyed the magic theme this time around. "
— Anne, 4/4/2013 -
" Another great read. Sometimes I felt it was a bit too much on the twists and turns but it still read good. Deaver is a solid thriller writer. He follows a pattern in his books but does it well. "
— Jakub, 3/19/2013 -
" The Lincoln Rhymes novels rule!Rhyne is a paraplegic with a really hot girlfriend who solves crimes through crime analysis techniques. He's a grumby old sumbitch who's only moving parts are his brain'mouth, and apparently his schlonger!Good stuff. "
— Bnschmid, 3/16/2013 -
" One of my favorite Deaver books! "
— Reema, 9/9/2012 -
" Ihave read every Jeffrey Deaver book written and he has never failed to zap me on the last page. Does it every time. The Blue Nowhere shattered my "amazement quotient" and from there I was hooked. Amazing writer. His last book is just as good as his first one, The Bone Collector. "
— Suzanne, 9/17/2011 -
" Loved the use of magic, what an interesting and devious spin. "
— Jeannie, 8/22/2011 -
" Very good mystery, lots of suspense. I am a lightweight when it comes to "scary or creepy", so this was hard for me to read. "
— Tiffany, 6/10/2011 -
" Read the condensed Readers' Digest story. "
— Pam, 5/15/2011 -
" Another excellent Jeffery Deaver book. This one is about a magician, an illusionist. Some of the things he did were a little over the top and unbelievable for real life, but it was a good story. "
— Patricia, 4/12/2011 -
" Simply put, one of the best modern mystery novels I've read in a long time. The amount of twists & turns Deaver crammed into this novel borders on the astounding, the premise of a trained illusionist as a deadly criminal ever better. Just... just read it. "

" The author is mainly trying to show off how clever he is, but failing.
The many plots, subplots, twists, and turns are no substitute for a good story.
Should I give up on this author or give the bone collector a try. "
— Johan, 12/22/2010 -
