Publisher Description
William Monk knows London’s streets like the back of his hand. But the river Thames and its teeming docks—where wharf rats and night plunderers ply their trades—is unknown territory. Only Monk’s dire need for work persuades him to accept an assignment from shipping magnate Clement Louvain, to investigate the theft of a cargo of African ivory from Louvain’s recently docked schooner, the Maude Idris. But why didn’t Louvain report the ivory theft directly to the River Police? Another mystery is the appearance of a desperately ill woman who Louvain claims is the discarded mistress of an old friend. Is she connected to the theft, or to something much darker? As Monk endeavors to solve these riddles, he can’t imagine the trap that will soon so fatefully ensnare him.
“With her visionary sensibility, Anne Perry is the master of the ‘you are there’ school of hist-myst storytelling. … [Here are] scenes that could have come out of Dickens’s Our Mutual Friend.”—New York Times Book Review

" i struggled to finish this one but its good i did as about halfway through there are new plot devices and the story heats up. Still much of the book is about a subject i find boring so I would not recommend it that highly unless you are interested in the shipping trade during Victorian times. "

The Shifting Tide Listener Reviews
-
" An odd book of two halves - I thought it was a detective novel but it also turns into a medical mystery, weaving William Monk's and his wife's tales into one book. Very good descriptions and suspense, but I would not recommend it unless you are already an Anne Perry fan. I think this is the first one I've read of the William Monk, so maybe that has had something to do with my enjoyment. "

" Perry continues to come up with compelling storylines for William & Hester to work through. The mysteries and historical aspect are engaging. The relationship of William & Hester, however, engages the heart. And part of this story is heart rending. "

" Good mystery. Anne Perry does well describing London in Victorian times. "
— Kathy, 1/7/2014 -

" OMG, a mystery like I've never read. Very good! "
— Amy, 12/11/2013 -
" This was by far my favorite William Monk novel. I found that the story was engaging, not as predictable as some of Anne Perry's books I have read. I found I learned a lot of the history about the plague. Best of all, the ending did not come to an abrupt ending, a refreshing change. "
— Cathy, 11/29/2013 -
" Started out slowly for me, but then became really engaging. Another great one in this fabulous series! "
— Bee, 11/24/2013 -

— Angela, 3/2/2013 -
" This story not only had william monk and hester, it also was a good piece of historical history discussing the black plague which killed over 50,000,000 people around the world. I enjoyed this book very much. "
— Susan, 2/22/2013 -
" The 2nd Anne Perry novel that I read. I have always loved Hester and admired Monk, but I find myself skipping pages just to see how it ended. I'm not a fan of 17th century setting, either. Maybe the book was not just the right read for me. Did not even made my heart skip a beat. "
— Tine, 12/18/2012 -
" One of her best ever!! Really kept me on the edge of my seat. "
— Pam, 4/14/2012 -

" Another great Monk novel. "
— Catarina, 10/25/2011 -
" My first time to read Anne Perry. Am impressed by her skill in telling a story and the development of a plot that is not the run of the mill. Would definitely recommend, in spite of the slight struggle to adapt to the vernacular speech. "
— Karin, 10/22/2011 -
" Wow, wow, wow! I thought I knew how much an Anne Perry book could grab me and suck me in, but this took it up a couple of notches. Excellent book, and I am glad that I waited to read it until I knew there was another one in the series! "
— Carrie, 8/29/2011 -

— Marlene, 6/10/2011 -

— Patricia, 5/6/2011 -
" As a member of the river police, William Monk is called upon to find a stolen cargo of ivory from a schooner. Hester operates a woman's shelter and meets a woman who may hold the key to the mystery as well as to multiple deaths aboard the schooner. "
— Cheryl, 5/25/2010 -
" Perry is excellent at her descriptions of human character. I love her insights into what people are thinking. "
— Angela, 1/2/2010 -
" This is a William Monk mystery by this British author. This is not one of her better mysterys in this series. The mystery of the stolen irony is discover in the middle of the bookand the rest of the book tells of the Black Plaque "
— Alberta, 9/15/2009 -
" A bit slow in places, but quite atmospheric "
— Nina, 8/18/2009 -
" Interesting look at the plague. Hester is someone to look up to. I really enjoyed reading this book. "

" A William Monk mystery. Pretty good "
— Cathy, 2/21/2009 -
" I LOVED the first 5 books of this series. Reading this one meant I skipped to number 14 or 15. I missed so much in the middle that the characters have changed and I don't like them as well now. Catching up is difficult. It's hard to find these on tape or MP3. "
— Pam, 1/1/2009 -

" Anne Perry placed her detective, Monk, in an inquiry on the London riverfront. At the same time, Monk's wife, Hester, faced a potentially devestating medical situation in her clinic for ill prostitutes. Although the cultural background was interesting, the book generally was rather slow. "
