In 1779, to subjugate Indigenous nations, George Washington ordered his troops to “ruin their crops now in the ground and prevent their planting more.” Destroying harvests is just one way that the United States has used food as a political tool. Andrea Freeman, a pioneer in the field of food politics, is the author of two books, including of Skimmed and Ruin Their Crops on the Ground. Her works have appeared in the Washington Post, Salon, The Takeaway, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, Black Agenda Report, and more. A Fulbright scholar, she is a professor at Southwestern Law School.
