Publisher Description
The career of playwright Joy Sinclair comes to an abrupt end on an isolated estate in the Scottish Highlands when someone drives an eighteen-inch dirk through her neck. Called upon to investigate the case in a country where they have virtually no authority, aristocratic Detective Inspector Thomas Lynley and his partner, Detective Sergeant Barbara Havers, grapple for both a motive and a murderer. Emotions run deep in this highly charged drama, for the list of suspects soon includes Britain's foremost actress, its most successful theatrical producer, and the woman Lynley loves. He and Havers must tread carefully through the complicated terrain of human relationships while they work to solve a case rooted in the darkest corners of the past and the unexplored regions of the human heart.

"This was a much less gruesome story than the 1st book. I like Lynley and the tension between he and Havers because of their different backgrounds and class, although I felt it was a little overplayed this story. Some sex and gruesome details, but a quick good mystery. "

" It was okay and I read it in a hurry so it did hold my interest but I don't really think I'm a mystery fan since this is the third I've read in a month and don't think I want to read another for awhile. "

" As entertaining and well written as the first.

I did guess correctly "who'd done it" by 2/3rd of the book, though. :) "

" Not quite as good as "Well Schooled in Murder," the other George book I've read so far, but satisfying nonetheless. "
— Tim, 4/2/2011 -
" This is a fascionating story of police detecting and social class distinctions in England, that takes place in, I'm not exactly sure when. Recently? 50 years ago? Hmm... very enjoyable. I kept guessing (wrong) who the killer was, though in the end, I was right! "
— Kate, 3/11/2011 -
" I would have given it 3 and a half stars but they don't have that designation. A good, moody mystery. Worth the read but I liked her book, A Great Deliverance better. "
— Donna, 2/5/2011 -
" Hmmm a bit like the game Cluedo!! "
— Julie, 12/20/2010 -
" Well crafted and a page turner. "
— Harry, 12/11/2010 -
" Another fantastic book in the Lynley series. This one had me guessing. I never figured out who was the killer until it was revealed. So well done! "
