"I love this series. It's a nice cozy, that intertwines the central mystery with events in the everyday lives of its two protagonists, so that you can't help but want to read more. There's mystery and romance set against a Victorian background. What more could you want?"

" A nice easy read in the Gaslight series. Love the setting of old NY and the characters. Strong woman making her way on her own breaking a bit free from the shelters wealthy family from which she comes. NY of that era is filled with interesting stories and people. Victoria Thompson is a good writer. Just wish that the budding romance between Sarah and Frank actually went somewhere. Mystery solving is fine but characters that don't evolve gets tiresome in a series after a while. "
— Sandy, 2/20/2014 -
" I continue to love this series, more so for the characters than the mysteries. I figured this one out too. And I am a little concerned by how "innocent" Sarah Brant still is but overall... This is the 2nd of 4 books I've read by candlelight during our week W/O power due to Hurricane Sandy. "
— Elisha, 2/14/2014 -
" Enjoyable addition to one of my favorite mystery series. The characters are like old friends and it was nice to visit with them again. "
— Heather, 2/8/2014 -
" More of the same. I always hope for more with this series. While the stories are well researched, the characters lack depth. "
— Kirsten, 2/4/2014 -
" I enjoy reading Ms. Thompson's books, she writes her story where you actually feel and envision how life was back in the early 19th century. Her books are not hard reads, but they are entertaining. "
— Beverly, 2/3/2014 -
" I thoroughly enjoy this series. Well-written, great characters, good mystery, historical interest...what more could you want? "
— Chelsea, 2/1/2014 -
" I can't exactly put my finger on it, but this seemed to be one of the weaker titles in the series. Maybe because there was no development of the major characters, and the minor ones all seemed rather stock. I was disappointed. I hope something happens soon with Sarah and Malloy to liven things up. "
— Arlene, 1/29/2014 -
" The theme was the same yet intriguing. "
— Anita, 1/20/2014 -
" Not quite as good as Anne Perry, but I'll read others of Thompson's mid 1800 mysteries set in NYC. Sarah Brandt is a midwife. "
— Maryann, 1/7/2014 -
" Starting to lose their magic. The relationship between Sarah and Malloy needs to move on. Story itself is more of the same. "
— Beth, 1/3/2014 -
" Gaslight mystery on autopilot. Zip on character development. The mystery plot is quite weak with too few suspects to keep the suspense going. Disappointing is the word to sum up this installment. "
— Laylah, 12/9/2013 -
" Not as good as some of her others "
— Vircar, 12/6/2013 -
" Quick light read. Interesting look at mores and attitudes of a different time. "
— Leslie, 11/26/2013 -
" There was no sexual tention between the MC's in this one. It was just okay. "
— Jerelyn, 11/26/2013 -
" Good book, I like Novels of mystery set back in time, and I like the characters. Not as good as Anne Perry, but a very good read, I will get some of the back ones in the Gaslight series, and get "up to date". "
— Mary, 8/10/2013 -
" Love this series--grew up in Chelsea so the area is familiar--plus my grandmother and mother lived in lower Manhattan at the turn of the 20th century so the clothing, street scenes etc are much as they described them. "
— Katherine, 2/6/2013 -
" Not one of her best, but still enjoyable. A very quick read. "
— Johanna, 12/7/2012 -
" Another great mystery by Victoria Thompson... This series in set in New York in the late 1800's I think and they are great.... But I sure wouldn't haven't wanted to live there at that time... "
— Diane, 11/24/2012 -
" Good quality short mystery that I have come to expect from Victoria Thompson. "
— Bill, 10/15/2012 -
" I really (!) want Frank and Sarah to get together. "
— Ally, 9/12/2012 -
" Another fantastic book by Victoria Thompson. A must read. She takes another step when considering mystery. "
— Melanie, 7/27/2012 -
" I enjoy this series set in the Victorian time in NY. Many strong women come forward during this period both here and in England. "
— Pat, 7/21/2012 -
" Interesting characters, not as strong as it could have been "
— Erin72, 6/7/2012 -
" I loved this book, but please progress the love story along between Frank and Sarah!! "
— Lana, 5/2/2012 -
" The first 30 pages really drew me in. I was like SWEET this is going to be a good book. But I was actually very disappointed. It ended up being really lame and it took forever to get to the point. "
— Audrey, 2/12/2012 -
" As usual, a great read about women at the turn of the century in NYC. This one has a slightly different twist, when the woman Sarah helps turns out to be not a very nice person. The charities at the turn of the century are not havens for those that need help either. "
— Judy, 1/3/2012 -
" I loved this book and the series "
— Donna, 9/2/2011
