Publisher Description
Weaving a tapestry of fact and fiction, Sara Donati’s epic novel sweeps us into another time and place … and into a breathtaking story of love and survival in a land of savage beauty.
It is December of 1792. Elizabeth Middleton leaves her comfortable English estate to join her family in a remote New York mountain village. It is a place unlike any she has ever experienced. And she meets a man unlike any she has ever encountered—a white man dressed like a Native American: Nathaniel Bonner, known to the Mohawk people as Between-Two-Lives. Determined to provide schooling for all the children of the village, Elizabeth soon finds herself locked in conflict with the local slave owners as well as with her own family. Interweaving the fate of the Mohawk Nation with the destiny of two lovers, Sara Donati’s compelling novel creates a complex, profound, passionate portrait of an emerging America.

"An English spinster arrives in 1792 upstate NY to an early settlement her father, a judge, established. She, headstrong, intelligent and independent, crosses paths with an equally headstrong, intelligent and aloof white man who lives with the local tribe. Beautifully written but with inconsistent character voices - one character speaks using words like ain't and another speaking eloquently."

" "Into the Wilderness" is definitely a 'girly' book. The author took characters from the story "Last of the Mohicans" and incorporated then into her story with her own characters. It is packed full of drama and also has a bit of comedy. "
— Jasmine, 12/28/2013 -
" LOVED this novel. I miss them all. I want to go back!! "
— Julia, 12/26/2013 -

" This was a fun and relaxing read. It is a historical fiction novel taking place in New York right after the American Revolutin. I enjoyed the characters and was captivated by the story. I likely will read the sequel. "
— Regina, 10/24/2013 -

— Sarah, 4/8/2013 -
" It's definitely no "Outlander," but the book was well written and entertaining. Definitely worth the time it took to read the book and enticing enough that I'm willing to invest in the series. "
— Randi, 1/20/2013 -
" I loved this entire series! I even bought it so I can read it again . . . something I rarely do. "
— Terry, 12/5/2012 -
" I really enjoyed this book and will continue to read the others in the series. "
— Sue, 11/10/2012 -
" This is the first book in the series I read when I was waiting for the next Outlander book to come out. Sara Donati and Diana Gabaldon know eachother and Claire shows up briefly in one of these books (I believe this one). This is another good series of historical fiction. "
— Shea, 9/3/2012 -
" I loved the relationships in this book. I am a huge fan of The Outlander series and this book reminded me of that series. I can't wait to read the next one! "
— Nancy, 8/3/2012 -
" Good grief. I think this must be the closest I've ever come to reading a romance novel, and I'm not a fan. Add to that the fact that the book was really long, and that the heroine's sensibilities struck me as far too modern for her to be a product of 1700's England. Not so good. "
— Aly, 11/16/2011 -
" If you liked "Last of the Mohicans" you'll love this book as it carries on with Hawkeye's family. "
— Nicola, 11/1/2011 -
" These Sara Donati books are awesome, should also be read in order of the series. Early American historical novels. Excellent reading. "
— Brenda, 10/28/2011 -
" This story beat out Pastora as my favorite book of all time. I felt as if I was a member of the Bonner family- at least I wish I was a member of their clan. Such a remarkable family. "
— Emilymarie, 10/16/2011 -
" This is an entertaining historical romance, reminiscent of Diana Gabaldon's books of Claire and Jamie in 18th century New England wilderness. Claire, Jamie, and Ian even make a small cameo in the book and several of the reviews on the cover of the book are from Diana Gabaldon. "
— Marti, 9/25/2011 -
" By far one of the best books, I've ever read. If you enjoy historical romance the story of the Bonner family is one not to be missed. This is the first book in the Wilderness series and my favorite because of the wonderful love story of Nathanial and Elizabeth. "
— Karen, 5/13/2011 -
" loved it!!! this is a continuation of the last of the mohicans and that is one of my favorite movies. This book is full of adventure and has an awesome love story. it is a huge book and I read in a week and. "

" based in the Lake George, NY area- a romeo and juliet kind of love story between a man brought up by the natives and an english immigrant "
— Leigh, 4/23/2011 -
" I was looking for something comparable to the Outlander Series. It is a great book to follow what I thought couldn’t be followed. Outlander Series is still my all-time favorite, but Into the Wilderness is a close second. "
— Heather, 4/17/2011 -
" I read this and the rest in the series years ago. Turns out one more has been published so I'm re-reading and enjoying. Reminds me of the Outlander series, very good, but not as good. "
— Miko, 4/12/2011 -
" One of the best books I have read. Great character development. By the time I finished the series, the characters became my friends. I hated to see this book end.<br/> "
— Linda, 4/3/2011 -
" This is a fabulous book with a robust story and great historical details - all packaged up with a great love story! I cannot wait to read the next in the series. This style is very reminiscent of the Outlander series by Diana Gabaldon (one of my favorites). "
— Susan, 4/2/2011 -
" This is the second book in a series. They are taken to Scotland against their will. The main characters shine even though the story gets too bogged down by description at times when reading. these are worth reading for historical value. "
— Linda, 3/31/2011 -
" I couldn't decide between four or five but I would think about this book when I wasn't reading it so I think it pushes it to a five. Great audio book! "
— Leslie, 3/30/2011 -
" I'm sort of embarrassed to have read this, even though the story was so good, because the love scenes were, well, intense. Reader beware! ;) "
— Kristy, 3/14/2011 -
" Loved it. Ready for the next one. Hint, Hint. "
