"I was born at 7 months immature in rural Zimbabwe 1981.Clinics were scarce and born at home meant l was likely not to make it.My dad would wait for the news of my passing everyday at work. And to.make matters worse, my mum got terribly sick.l never got any of my mother's milk and my siblings today think thats why l am a little crazy. My mum says its the early birth and my brains are full of water.Never the less, l made it as each day l grew stronger on goat's milk until one day, my dad came home and l was smiling at 2 months old.He says " he knew straight away l had made it and named me Champion. This name, would be a burden throughout my whole life, and l grew tp hate it.I remember the shock and disbelief on everbody's face after a huge fail.I remember the questioning each time l was called out," is this your real name"But most of all l remember the name getting me spanked so many times l lost count. One such morning l was late for school and wirh a bunch of other kids we were put to the headmaster's office, Mr Takawira and spanked times each.As he got to me, he bellowed with rage, " you think you are a champion so you come to school any time you want." He spanked me again, and again and each time asked me to shout " l am not a champion"This hurt, and l felt once again my dad had put me in trouble, l hated him at this pointThe pressure grew and it would get worse but name stuck deep.Expectations were always high, l would evenrually learn to match up and accept failure as part of it , but not without attempting to change the name.My biggest test came in grade seven. I remember that first day in class so well it feel like yesterday.Mr Chauruka, a short very mean man walked in and outlined the rules so so clearly. Punctualityenglish only, we are here to learn. Easy right, but the fourth one, with our small minds couldn't get the meaning, " DO NOT TROUBLE TROUBLE UNTIL TROUBLE TROUBLES YOU" It would take me to secondary school to finally understand this one rule."
