Publisher Description
When beautiful, blond Sheila married the charming, handsome Blackthorne, she was convinced she had found her perfect soul mate, and helped him attain the privileged life of the country club set. But behind Allen's smooth facade, she discovered a violent, controlling sociopath -- a liar, a scam artist, a sexual deviant. When she finally fled with their two young daughters, she was skeletally thin, bruised, and beaten.
Although Sheila recovered and remarried, she still felt she was doomed. Joyously pregnant -- she and her new husband expected quadruplets -- Sheila still feared Blackthorne would use his millions and power to track her down. As did her killer, who left her in a pool of blood marked by the tiny footprints of her two-year old toddlers. Could the authorities ever link Sheila's murder to Blackthorne himself? Was his true obsession high-stakes golf and his extravagant pink mansion -- or was it to destroy Sheila?
Following a trail of deception from Oregon and Hawaii to Texas and Florida, Ann Rule gained complete access to Sheila's family, friends, and neighbors, as well as to the detectives and prosecutors on the case. With Every Breath You Take, Ann Rule has written a heart-pounding account of obsession, revenge, and murder that will enthrall listeners from beginning to end.

"Ann Rule lays out the facts of this murder case with all the mystery and characterization you would expect. She explains how Sheila Bellush met and married Allen Blackthorne, only to find that his charming personality was hiding a shady swindler. After years of abuse and the birth of two daughters, Sheila found the courage to leave him and later remarried and subsequently gave birth to quadruplets. Alan also remarried and was hugely successful in business, but seemed obsessed with the need to punish Sheila for leaving him. With four toddlers huddled around her dead body, investigators quickly found the culprits—but were they sent by Sheila's ex-husband, or did they commit the act on their own."

Quotes

“Affecting, tense, and smart true-crime.”
— Washington Post Book World -
“Rule, in classic form, meticulously re-creates the…lives of her characters.”
— Publishers Weekly -
“A sober, nonsensational account of Sheila’s murder, the miund-boggling series of events preceding it, and the nail-biting sequence of twists and turns in the investigation of the crime…As usual, Rule excels at painting psychologically perceptive portraits of all the characters in this stranger-than-fiction but nevertheless real-life drama.

Every Breath You Take Listener Reviews
-
" I don't remember ever reading a true crime book before, and it took some getting used to. There was a lot of repetition and jumping around. But, all in all, it was a pretty interesting and engaging story, and the ending seemed morally appropriate. "
— Sue, 2/18/2014 -
" This is an awesome book. The gal that this story is about requested that if anything ever happened to her, that Ann Rule write her story. It is sad and riveting all at the same time. "
— Hez, 2/15/2014 -
" I am a big fan of murder mysteries and courtroom drama. The fact that this was based on a true story made the book that much more fascinating. It did read like a "Who's Who?" in spots...with names and dates that I have already forgotten. However, the author did a good job of giving the reader enough background to really understand...or try to understand...the complex character of the man who orchestrated the murder of his ex-wife. All in all, it is a very sad true story and a pretty good read. "
— Debbie, 2/13/2014 -
" Sticking with the true Ann Rule fashion, once again, she has outdone herself with this true story. I couldn't put this book down! I wish Ann Rule would write something new, but then, for that to happen, would mean, that someone has to be a victim, and I don't advocate that, but she is the best true-crime writer of this century! "
— Kimberly, 2/4/2014 -
" This is a mystery based on fact. Lots of details and well written. The first half is info leading up to the murder of Sheila, the Florida mom with quadruplets. The second half is all of the investigations and people involved in proving who did it. Another one that I didn't finish though; got bogged down by the details in the second half. "
— Laurie, 2/1/2014 -
" Just started reading this and can't put it down. Allen is a twisted sick man. It is amazing how cons everone and gets away with everything. Almost everything. "
— Jamie, 1/25/2014 -
" True-crime novel about a woman who divorces a socio-path and gets on with her life with a new husband and quadruplets only to be haunted by the first husband. "
— Melissa, 1/23/2014 -
" I have never been disappointed by an Ann Rule book. "
— Annette, 1/19/2014 -

— Amy, 1/18/2014 -
" psycho becomes husband, father, millionaire in a few short years. scarily shows just how easy it is for someone to get a couple of dumb bunnies to commit murder for him. "

— Kim, 1/4/2014 -
" Enjoyed, but it got tedious about three quarters of the way through. I remember hearing the news reports about the murder and seeing the interviews given by Allen Blackthorne. "
— Jan, 12/6/2013 -
" A controlling sociopath terrorizes his wife. Then there are other short true crime stories in addition. "

— Tina, 9/15/2012 -

— WK, 8/21/2012 -
" The Queen of true crime books. This is one is good. "
— Rod, 6/28/2012 -
" Pretty good. The crime itself was interesting and Allen Blackthorne was/is fascinating. It started to drag in the second half once it got into the court proceedings. "
— Karen, 6/27/2012 -
" Another great book I read straight through in one night! "
— Barbara, 4/20/2012 -
" My secret shame. True crime novels. My neighbor figured it out and now passes these along to me, and I read them, oh, yes I do. The best part is that I can pass them on to my mother, who also has the secret addiction. Bwa ha ha "
— Valissa, 1/13/2012 -
" It was intresting to see it on the news then to read the details. "
— Chelsi, 12/27/2011 -
" A very well written true crime book. "
— Laurie, 11/1/2011 -
" I'm not so much into true crime books, but this one is very good. Sad story, which is why I try to stay away from true crime, but very suspenseful and with a slightly happy ending. "
— Krissy, 9/28/2011 -
" Good straight forward account of a horrible crime. I didn't realize she wrote the Stranger Beside Me, the story of serial killer Ted Bundy which I read in high school! She's got a slew of other true life crime books out there and I'll definitely try another one. "
— Ellen, 9/5/2011 -
" I always love reading Anne Rule books; they are heartbreaking, but riveting. It's scary how a successful, outgoing millionare can be a demon on the inside. I do often think about the family the woman left behind, and hope they are doing OK in life. "
— Kristin, 8/30/2011 -
" Great book. I loved how I knew where everything is since I live in San Antonio. Although, I think I may be afraid of my neighbors from now on because you just never know. "
— Jill, 7/17/2011 -
" This book was a bit too detailed on the investigation. There were so many police officers and investigators mentioned that I had a hard time keeping them all straight! But all in all, it was a very enjoyable read and it held my interest all the way through to the end. "
— Peg, 6/16/2011 -
" I enjoyed this book. She made the characters very real to me. The story was a bit hard to follow but I liked it. "
— Dondero, 4/28/2011 -
" This is the type of book that will make the reader become very emotionally envolved with the characters. At points it made me angry at some of the characters and cry at others. The saddest part about the whole story is that it's a true story. =( "
— ?~Nikolio~?, 3/15/2011 -
" A very well written true crime book. "
— Laurie, 2/2/2011 -
" A long book [almost 700 pages] but this one didn't bore me during the trial details. "
— Kay, 1/31/2011 -
" Not one of Ann Rule's best efforts. "
— Sam, 1/14/2011 -
" I love True Crime books and this one did not disappoint. Can't read too many of these back-to-back though, too depressing, to think people really are like this. "
— Patricia, 12/31/2010 -
" This wasn't my favorite Ann Rule book, but pretty still a good, interesting, thoroughly researched book. "
— Gina, 11/17/2010 -
" This book was waaaaay to long. It would have been fine if the author had not foreshadowed heavily so much throughout the book that you knew the outcome all along. It made you wish it would just be over with it! "
— Emily, 7/25/2010 -
" This guy Allen got away with a lot of things in his life but he finally got it in the end. "
— Kristen, 5/10/2010 -
" This was a crazy book...I still even with the job that I do, cannot beliee some of the things that people will do to their own familiy and loved ones. "
