Publisher Description

Charles Dickens’ Dombey and Son is a powerful exploration of pride, loss, and redemption in Victorian society. Mr. Paul Dombey, a wealthy shipping magnate, values status and male succession above all, coldly favoring his son over his devoted daughter, Florence. When tragedy disrupts his ambitions, Dombey’s rigid world begins to crumble. Neglected and unloved, Florence endures hardship with quiet resilience, embodying compassion and loyalty. As deceit, betrayal, and financial ruin surround him, Dombey faces the consequences of emotional neglect. Through vivid characters and intricate plotting, Dickens critiques materialism, gender roles, and familial duty. Ultimately, the novel affirms the redemptive power of love, humility, and forgiveness in a story both sweeping in scope and deeply human in emotion.

About Charles Dickens

Charles Dickens (1812–1870) was born in Landport, Portsmouth, England, the second of eight children in a family continually plagued by debt. A legacy brought release from the nightmare of debtors’ prison and child labor and afforded him a few years of formal schooling. He worked as an attorney’s clerk and newspaper reporter until his early writings brought him the amazing success that was to be his for the remainder of his life. He was the most popular English novelist of the Victorian era, and he remains popular, responsible for some of English literature’s most iconic characters.
