Publisher Description
From the internationally acclaimed author of the Harry Hole novels—a fast, tight, darkly lyrical stand-alone novel that has at its center the perfectly sympathetic antihero: an Oslo contract killer who draws us into an unexpected meditation on death and love.
This is the story of Olav: an extremely talented “fixer” for one of Oslo’s most powerful crime bosses. But Olav is also an unusually complicated fixer. He has a capacity for love that is as far-reaching as is his gift for murder. He is our straightforward, calm-in-the-face-of-crisis narrator with a storyteller’s hypnotic knack for fantasy. He has an “innate talent for subordination” but running through his veins is a “virus” born of the power over life and death. And while his latest job puts him at the pinnacle of his trade, it may be mutating into his greatest mistake. . . .

“The undisputed king of Scandinavian crime fiction…I am so used to the energetic plot twists, fiendish violence, and addictive verbosity of Nesbø’s writing that Blood on Snow, with its simplicity, brevity, and unlikely poetry, comes as a welcome antidote. It is set in the 1970s, an era of increasing fascination to Nesbø, and has a first-person narrative that provides a window into its protagonist’s lonely, tortured soul.”

Quotes

"[An] incendiary cocktail of murder, revenge, and a hit man with multiple problems.”
— Independent (London) -
“To call Blood on Snow a crime novel would be an immense understatement…It’s also a beautiful, complicated, and skillfully rendered love story…A short, compact, and lean book, a novella, really—no extraneous twists or descriptions or even words. But it packs an emotional punch with it gorgeous prose and a taut plot.”
— Associated Press -
“Blood on Snow is indeed horribly potent. Here Nesbø’s perennial themes—crime, violence, and alienation in a monochrome Oslo—are distilled to their darkest essence.”
— Barnes&Noble.com, editorial review -
“This tender killer who tries to maintain reason and compassion in a brutal world will appeal to Nesbø’s fans and generate new followers. Highly recommended.”
— Library Journal (starred review) -
“A plot reminiscent of a 1940s American noir novel. A damaged loner, Olav is full of contradictions, but he’s more intelligent and emotional than he’ll admit, which gives the book a bit of humanity and humor.”
— Publishers Weekly -
“A Nordic noir updating of James M. Cain’s Love’s Lovely Counterfeit (1942) with an equally sweet-natured killer.”
