"This is a love letter to the settlers who came to Forida during the Civil War to live on the land and make a future for themselves and their children. But it's also an indictment of those who took all the land had to give without a thought for the future. The characters are mostly idealized but the general story line is true. Thank goodness for the visionaries who established our beautiful national, state and county parks to preserve some small part of what these early settlers experienced."

" This was a thoroughly engaging book for me, but I love stories of old Florida. Much like Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings book, The Yearling, this work of historical fiction, describes the early days of rustic, undeveloped Florida, replete with palmettos, cypress trees, swamps, and loads of wildlife. "
— Barb, 2/16/2014 -
" I LOVE the history but wish he had made the characters more personal... I felt like they were just there to carry out the story and I wasn't particularly emotionally connected to them. "
— Molly, 2/15/2014 -
" This book was recomended to me and I have to say that I really enjoyed reading about my home state. It never occured to me how hard it was for people to habitat this state in its wild and unseen before splendor. I would suggest anyone read this book about a families struggles and love for a land they loved. "

" This is a really great book with so much Florida history. It's about a fictional family that moved to Florida in the 1800's before it was developed. It was nothing but marsh, swamp, and natives. Very good. "
— Amy, 12/1/2013 -

" I HATED THIS BOOK!!!!!!! I would have skipped it had I had the choice, but it was summer reading. It was all about 3 generations of people dying in the Florida wilderness. URRRRGGGGG! It was so long and had practically no plot line whatsoever. I will NEVER read it again!!!! "
— Hailey, 10/4/2013 -
" Written to a lower reading level (middle school), but a quick read that definitely kept my interest, especially living in Florida. It's basically Florida historical fiction, with an environmental theme. Makes me grateful that the Everglades were actually saved from massive development and expansion. "
— Cherie810, 8/13/2013 -
" A great story and interesting history of Florida, but not particularly well written. "
— Gaylen, 1/17/2013 -

" And yet more proof that I really like reading historical fiction. I loved this book. It was a very easy and interesting read. Short chapters. The end was good and then the author added one more paragraph of only 2 sentences and made it amazing! "
— Shelly, 5/13/2012 -
" One of the best books I've ever read.... a must read for all Floridians!! "
— Julia, 1/24/2012 -
" Read this in High School. Loved it for its historial richness. Great story! Long book. "
— Tori, 1/22/2012 -
" It was a good representation of Florida's history, which is why it earned two stars. Based solely on the writing and the story, it doesn't deserve a single star. I don't know how this book got published and I wonder even more where the editors were. "
— Renee, 1/20/2012 -
" Great book about old Florida. "
— Heather, 12/15/2011
