Al Jolson (1886–1950) was a Russian-born singer, songwriter, and blackface comedian who performed in vaudeville and minstrel shows in the United States and starred in The Jazz Singer, the first feature film with synchronized speech. He went on to appear in films such as The Singing Fool and Swanee River, and he provided the voice-over for The Jolson Story, a film based on his life.
