Publisher Description

WINNING MEANS WEALTH, FAME, AND A LIFE OF THERAPY LOSING MEANS DEATH, BUT ALSO FAME! THIS IS THE HUNGER PAINS

When Kantkiss Neverclean replaces her sister as a contestant on the Hunger Games—the second-highest-rated reality TV show in Peaceland, behind Extreme Home Makeover—she has no idea what to expect. Having lived her entire life in the telemarketing district's worst neighborhood, the Crack, Kantkiss feels unprepared to fight to the death while simultaneously winking and looking adorable for the cameras. But when her survival rests on choosing between the dreamy hunk from home, Carol Handsomestein, or the doughy klutz, Pita Malarkey, Kantkiss discovers that the toughest conflicts may not be found on the battlefield but in her own heart . . . which is unfortunately on a battlefield.

"I think the author did a great job making this laugh out loud parody and basing it off of another great book "The Hunger Games." I would recommend this book to anyone who likes to laugh. I gave this book 5 stars because it is the funniest book i have ever read/"

" This is pretty appalling stuff. I thought it would be funny but no, maybe it is because I love Collins' trilogy so much that to do this to it is sacrilegious. "

" This book was so bad, that if it were an option, I would give it 0 stars. I get that it's a parody and maybe I would like their Twilight parody better because I hated Twilight, but this wasn't even funny to me. First of all, their humor was bad (they called Haymitch, Buttitch for one... seriously??) and I felt the whole story was just overall crappy (but maybe that's because I really enjoyed The Hunger Games, so it kind of irks me that people would make fun of it... I guess I should have expected that going in). The only redeeming quality of this book is that it was super short, so thankfully my misery was short-lived. "

" Sometimes lampoons/spoofs seem kind of brainless and silly to me, but this one had some thoughtful kickers, and managed to poke fun at both the The Hunger Games and the dystopian teen genre in general. I also liked the nod to Japan's Hunger Games predecessor, Battle Royale. "

" The Hunger Pains is a parody of The Hunger Games. While at first, the gags and jokes are funny, they quickly tire. I can understand if you changed one or two things from the actual books (like some of the character personalities and the setting of the arena). But after a while the gags got kind of old. If they had stuck with just Kantkiss being an idiot, the book would have been funny the whole way through. Also, killing a baby is never funny...once they gruesomely killed Run, I was ready for the book to be over. Funny until a certain point and clearly the ribs at the original books were funny. But take it lightly and pretty much stop reading when Kantkiss and Run become allies. "

" Oh my god.... It was just sooooo stupid. Not even stupid-funny. Just stupid-stupid. I can see tweens enjoying it because they live in that mindset, but anyone above the age of 14 will most likely find it badly done. "

" This was lent to me by a student, and I'll admit that it definitely had its funny moments. Smash was a standout favorite for me. Even though I LOVED The Hunger Games, it did fall into the YA trap of repetition and character cliches, and those are on full display here. "

" Okay this was hilariously clever for the first half of the book, then once they went into the games it just got stupid and I kept reading hoping it would get better. It didn't. The first half deserves a 5/5 while the second half deserves a 0/5. "
