"This is an engaging "thriller," a fast paced page turner that's amazingly hard to put down. If you're looking for a fun read with a little depth -- along the lines of Harris or King but feel a little funny about letting people see you read Grisham or Patterson, then this would be my pick. Nothing wrong with doing anything for sheer instant gratification though. Highly recommended."

— David (4 out of 5 stars)

Quotes

  • “Read this book. It is better than any suspense novel since Silence of the Lambs.”

    — Stephen King
  • “Spectacular…Ten shades blacker and grimmer than the novels of John Grisham…Do yourself a favor. Read this book.”

    — Entertainment Weekly (A+ rating)
  • “Expertly crafted…Will make you feel like an unindicted co-conspirator. To say more about the plot would ruin the pleasure of reading the book for yourself.”

    — People
  • “Like watching a train wreck. There is nothing to be done, but it is impossible to turn away.”

    — Chicago Tribune
  • “[An] astonishingly adept, ingeniously plotted debut thriller.”

    — Publishers Weekly
  • “An eerily flat confessional whose horror is only deepened by its flashes of tenderness. Think of a backwater James M. Cain, or a contemporary midwestern Unforgiven—and don't think about getting any sleep tonight.”

    — Kirkus Reviews

" Probably the most ridiculous and unbelievable book I have ever read. Despite all the rave reviews, the two lead characters are operated like mindless puppets by the author to create his idea of a thriller without doing any of the work. There is no way these two would have ever behaved this way. None. Zip. Zilch. Nada. "

" A fair book about three men who are out hunting and discover a wrecked airplane with 4.5 million dollars in it. The men decide to keep the money and not tell anyone about it. Things soon snow ball out of control and terrible things start to happen. This book was hard for me to read because these guys all did the stupidest things possible. Unbelievably stupid. The book starts off great but rapidly declines. In the end it just irritated the crap out of me. "

" There are aspects of this book that I really liked. I could not anticipate several of the twists and turns that occured throughout the novel. However, I found the characters to be utterly detestable. I personally would've preferred if they had some redeeming qualities and therefore were more relatable. I could not tolerate Hank (the narrator) and his bat shit crazy wife, Sarah, trying to justify their heinous actions. The puzzle pieces of their characters just didn't fit together for me. I enjoyed the premise of this book and the twists and turns throughout but overall would not re-read or recommend it. "

" There is something i really like about books that combine horror elements and psychological disintegration. Scott Smith manages to blend these two elements perfectly, in a tale that combines historical elements, bloody horror, and mental breakdown. Loved it - 5 Stars. "
