"Maybe even 4.5 stars. Anna Quindlen speaks with the voice of one who has been down a long, dark road and lived to tell about it. I don't know how much personal tragedy she has experienced in her own life, but I'm amazed at the wisdom and understanding that color each chapter of this book. As the mom of teenagers, I found myself nodding my head in agreement with Mary Beth's exasperation. Over and over I wanted to underline little nuggets of wisdom and insight, but alas, I was reading a library copy. I loved this book. I love Quindlen's writing. (Although I will mention that there is some strong language.) Definitely a story that will haunt my thoughts for quite some time."

" Amazing audiobook! Hope Davis manages to give life to a range of distinct personalities and to make the story come oh so alive. I think she's a fantastic narrator. And Anna Quindlin is a bloody amazing author. So there, the perfect combination. "

" Anna quindland has a beautiful style of writing, and the story unfolds with its twists happening unexpectedly. Hope Davis does an excellent job bringing the caracters to the front with different inflections of her voice, tone and even accents, makes you feel you're right there. An excellent reading/acting "

" I wasn't expecting the magnitude of the tragedy that happened. The last half of the book it's hard not to put yourself in Mary Beth's situation to try to catch a glimpse of how she must be feeling & how the reader themselves would cope if in the same scenario. Well-written, honest, easy to attach to the characters. "

" Outstanding book, could not put it down. I haven't ready Anna Quindlen since "Black and Blue", now I remember just why I so enjoyed it. Ms. Quindlen's style of self-reflective musings and probing of the motherhood gene had me nodding and agreeing often. It's been a long time since I've been in tears by simply reading a book. Highly recommended. "

" Anna Quindlen's writing is such beautiful use of the English language. She can capture a sense, or a moment, so perfectly. In this novel, it is all about mothering and our connections to our children. It feels as if someone were reading my mind and was then able to condense my thoughts and feelings into concise and articulate words. There is not a fast moving plot, but the inner dialogue of the main character is so compelling. I couldn't put it down. "
