It deals with the discrimination of the black in the time of the great depression and how some thought of the blacks as less than human with out feelings and others saw through to their heart and soul. It discussed how when faced with grief of a child men and woman mourn differently. overall great book. I didn't like the ending. It wasn't a bad ending just not the happily ever after kind. Kind of like life. "
