Publisher Description

GIFTED WITH A BRILLIANT MIND, BLESSED WITH A BEAUTIFUL FAMILY -- AND CURSED WITH A DESTRUCTIVE MADNESS

In this harrowing New York Times bestseller, Ann Rule is at her masterful best as she winnows horrific truths from the ashes of what seemed like paradise in Prairie Village, Kansas. Rule probes the case of Debora Green, a doctor and a loving mother who seemed to epitomize the dreams of the American heartland. A small-town girl with a genius IQ, she achieved an enviable life: her own medical practice, a handsome physician husband, three perfect children, and an opulent home in an exclusive Kansas City suburb. But when a raging fire destroyed that home and took two lives, the trail of clues led investigators to a stunning conclusion. Piece by piece, Ann Rule digs beneath this placid Midwestern facade to unveil a disturbing portrait of strangely troubled marriages, infidelity, desperation, suicide, and escalating acts of revenge that forever changed dozens of lives.

"I found this to be one of Rule's stronger books, but I agree with other reviewers that it is colored by not truly understanding Deb Green (at least until the last chapter). I think she was fair and not overly biased towards Michael Ferrar however it was clear that she spoke to him extensively so that this is really his story despite the subtitle."

" I read this book really quick and found it a very interesting read. It wasn't as "thrilling" as some other of Anne Rule's books but I still really enjoyed reading it. I found alot of the stuff repetitive which turned me off, but at the same time found it intriguing for the most part. "

" True crime is pretty scary. I don't think I could do a regular diet of it. It is fascinating in a morbid way to read about people who are capable of such evil. I remember reading and hearing about this story when I was in college as it only happend an hour from my home town. Ann Rule does a great job of showing all aspects of the case. "

" Ann Rule really puts time and effort into researching and getting her facts straight. I always feel like I know these people by the time I'm done reading. This was a very disturbing case involving a mother who ends up killing two of her children. "

" One reason I wanted to read this book was because I enjoy true crime, but the other is because I used to live in Prairie Village. I moved there a few years after the trial, so there was not much news about itby then, but I wonder if the doctor worked at the hospital where I worked? Makes me wonder who my neighbors really are! " A sad and tragic story of a family torn apart and destroyed by the murder of two of the children by their own mother. A good read, however, slow moving in parts. My first book from Ann Rule. Hoping that if I read more, they are more captivating and more fast paced. "
