Publisher Description

SHAKESPEARE SHAPIRO HAS ALWAYS hated his name. His parents bestowed it on him as some kind of sick joke when he was born, and his life has gone downhill from there, one embarrassing incident after another. Entering his senior year of high school, Shakespeare has never had a girlfriend, his younger brother is cooler than he is, and his best friend's favorite topic of conversation is his bowel movements. But Shakespeare will have the last laugh. He is chronicling every mortifying detail in his memoir, the writing project each senior at Shakespeare's high school must complete. And he is doing it brilliantly. And, just maybe, a prize-winning memoir will bring him respect, admiration, and a girlfriend . . . or at least a prom date.

"I think this might be my favorite book of 2010. It was hysterical! As I was reading it to my class, I couldn't stop laughing at points. But the book also has its serious moments, and really, throughout the novel, Shakespeare is taking a very evaluative look at himself. I have a student who "hates" to read, and he borrowed the book and finished it in a night. He is now on his second read of it."

" This was the funniest (and most offensive) book I have read in a long time. If you have EVER wondered what goes through the mind of a high school boy (and aren't afraid to actually find out)... here it is. "

" I laughed, I cried, I remembered my high school days....I sympathized with Shakespeare over his 'unique' parents. This author has a fresh writing style that kept me reading and wondering what the next page would hold. "

" Hilarious! I was kind of afraid to read it in bed because I was afraid I would giggle out loud and wake up my husband. I think my favorite line was, "I bet Hitler's mother never made him go to therapy." "

" This was a hilarious book about a boy named Shakespeare Shapiro. With a name like Shakespeare, you can imagine how the ordinary awkwardness of teenage-dom must be. It is witty, smart and edgy. I loved it! It is written in both first person and third (as essays about himself). Check it out. "

" This was a really good "Boy Book" with lots of crude humor, sexual obsession, and a generally authentic feel to it-- I imagine that this is the way highschool boys REALLY think! I thought the use of yearbook entries to tie up plot points was a cheap way out, though. "

" I think that this book was filled with funny things and sad things on every other page. Shakespeare was a wonderful writer, but he wasn't really committing to his thoughts at first. In the end of the book he finally commits to his thoughts and does what he wants to do. "

" I thought the writing in this book was very creative and interesting, but most of the subject matter made me cringe. I don't need to be inside of a teenage boy's mind so fully. I prefer to leave a little to the imagination - or my naive teacher sensibilities. "
