Publisher Description

Being a hefty, deaf newcomer almost makes Will Halpin the least popular guy at Coaler High. But when he befriends the only guy less popular than him, the dork-namic duo has the smarts and guts to figure out who knocked off the star quarterback. Will can’t hear what’s going on, but he’s a great observer. So, who did it? And why does that guy talk to his fingers? And will the beautiful girl ever notice him? (Okay, so Will’s interested in more than just murder . . .) Those who prefer their heroes to be not-so-usual and with a side of wiseguy will gobble up this witty, geeks-rule debut.

"This was a nice little YA book! Will was adorably self-depreciating. He did a good job of describing what led him to leave the deaf school. He struggles with making friends and being bullied. And he solves a mystery. It was totally believable too. Sometimes mysteries with unlikely "detectives" aren't believable at all, but Berk did an excellent job with this one."

" This was an interesting book... I like the evolution of Hamburger Halpin and the lessons learned through the story. The "mystery" is very cardboard (not strong) but for a novel meant for 12yrs old, it's good. "

" So far, a great narrator who is almost legally deaf but wants to be in mainstream education. Considering he doesn't catch every word with lip reading, we don't either... "

" Quirky, funny and enjoyable read. The back and forth dialogue betweeen the characters is true-to-life and readers will enjoy seeing the atypical hero solve the mystery. Can't wait to read more books by debut novelist Josh Berk. "

" This was a unique and interesting book with a very charming main character, the deaf and overweight Will Halpin. I found the mystery intriguing and the premise was excellent, but I came away feeling a bit "meh" about it. Not sure why, actually. Full review at One Librarian's Book Reviews. "

" An interesting portrait of a teen who has a disability. He wasn't entirely likable, so it made it hard to get into at the beginning, but I did like his sarcasm and sense of humor. I also liked that this was a mystery too, not just a book about a kid who's hearing impaired. "
