Witchin Good Time

It’s officially the spookiest of seasons, and with that, we thought we’d visit one of our favs in terms of the creepy creatures who roam moonlight nights: the witch. Witches have definitely reinvented themselves lately. In addition to the classic wart-infested green pallor of your say, classic spell-casting cackler, we’re seeing the witch archetype expand from villain to hero.

Whether you believe in them or not, witches have always been a representation of the “other” in society, and it’s been interesting to watch their evolution from outright villains (which is still fun to visit) to the reluctant protagonist, and we hope you enjoy listening to their magical journeys as we have. This is just a smattering of all the witchy listens we have available at AudiobookSTORE.com so make your month and listen to them all!

Hour of the Witch – Chris Bohjalian

Here we have a witchy tale with an old-school feel and a feminist slant. Mary Deerfield, resident of an OG American colony, and wife of a human skin tag must figure out how to escape her violent marriage as well as the suspicions of the puritanical townsfolk gunning for her to hang- because a woman who wants to be treated kindly in matrimony and attempts to help sick kids with herbs must be a demon, right?

A Discovery of Witches – Deborah Harkness

Here we meet Diana in this breathtaking debut in the now beloved series- a reluctant witch in denial of her ill-contained abilities, things get real when she discovers a magical relic of a book that other-worldly entities would kill (literally) to get their hands/talons/ claws on. There’s also a #relationshipgoals level forbidden romance with a vampire; get your spooky swoon on.

The Witch of Blackbird Pond – Elizabeth George Spear

This one is a classic and for good reason. We’ve got a badass heroine Kit, who is ready to shake things up in her new Puritan town. By “shake things up” we mean teach kids to read and be nice to an elderly woman who dares to be a different religion than the rest of the town. God the bar was low in 1687. Naturally, because she’s “different” aka not the worst, the town assumes she and Hannah (the elderly woman she befriends) are witches and try to kill them. Ah, the good old days. Also, this book gave 15-year-old me unrealistic expectations about sailors coming to my rescue at the last minute and naming a ship after me before they propose.

The Bone Witch – Rin Chupeco

We saved the darkest for last, and this one is a doozy- in a good way. Here we follow Tea, who finds herself an outcast even among her fellow witches. She’s a bone witch (spoiler, but not… because… the title) aka she can raise the dead. Taken under the wing of an experienced bone witch, Tea learns that those of her ilk are either destined for good or bad magic…seems she has a choice to make…
