Give yourself Goosebumps – R.L. Stine Spotlight

If there are two things we love they’re 1. a nostalgia fest and 2. Halloween. That’s why this week’s recommendation is to pop in some headphones and rediscover the much beloved Goosebumps series. (We once fought Grant Williams in the 4th grade for the privilege of reading “Return of the Mummy” first, true story. No demerit has ever been more worth it). See what fun PG-themed thrills await as you hear spooky tales that always conclude with a zany twist, perfect for some horror-lite listens.

They have the added bonus of being kid-friendly (at least with older kids) so go make some Halloween-filled family memories today!

One Day at Horrorland

A family road trip (plus one friend) turns into terror after the Morris family takes a wrong turn into a theme park titled, you guessed it, Horrorland. While the prospect of being the sole attendees at a mysterious amusement park would typically seem like a red flag, the fam goes with it and hops on a few rides. The rides try to kill them (naturally) and they decide they should get out of dodge. But that might not be as easy as they thought, both because their car exploded and because there are some park employees who are reluctant to let them escape.

Return of the Mummy

In this sequel, we are reunited with Gabe as he travels to spend the summer in Egypt and awaken long-dead cursed mummies, as one does. He of course didn’t forget to pack a severed mummified hand with sacred magical powers because airports in the 90s, are we right? Anyway, he arrives and in what is probably a flagrant disregard for procedure, his uncle allows him and some rando to accompany him to a dig site and inside an ancient pyramid. Given the title, it’s no surprise that they unleash an undead mummy/ unleash chaos, but we argue the real commentary here is on ageism and the fear of aging. Stine- tween author, horror aficionado, realistic beauty standard warrior.

Revenge of the Lawn Gnomes

Rival cal gardening dads, friendships thrown in the middle of the fray, and cured lawn ornaments that come to life to stoke the bitter flames of the feud. This one is action-packed and full of deception, mischief, and a dog who survives till the end, so if you were worried don’t be, we’ve got you covered. After listening we have no doubt that lawn ornaments pepper the lawn of hell.

The Haunted Mask

Carly Beth is SICK of being bullied. Frankly, the school district and parents seem inept at addressing the situation here, so she takes matters into her own hands, purchases a mask to frighten her two adversaries, and hopes that this will put an end to her misery. When the disgusting and terrifying mask fuses onto her face, well, that honestly sounds like a quality control defect. The shop owner from which the mask was purchased was very little help, so apparently, the main theme here is that adults are useless. R.L. Stine aiming right for our hearts.
