British Literature Everyone Should Have Read By Now

Below you’ll find classics that hipsters at micro-breweries know well – classics that while they have merit in the literary world, might have missed a spot on a standard reading list. If you’ve ever dreamed of connecting with an English professor as you drift across moors, (one or both of you is probably wearing a sweater vest), then this list of listens is for you.

Northanger Abbey – Jane Austen

Looking for some classic Austen satire in an underrated package? We all know and love “Emma” and “Pride & Prejudice” but Austen’s other works are unfairly overlooked. Explore a novel literally criticizing…inept heroines in novels as you explore themes of feminism, the pitfalls of wealth in regard to respectability, and of course a cute lil’ romance to tie everything together.

Animal Farm – George Orwell

Considering the time in which this was published is important since at its heart it’s a scathing illustration of socialism in action. Penned in the 40s, it’s no surprise as things were becoming…awkward with Russia post WWII. Regardless, it’s a classic that asks hard questions about motive, intention, and the inherent corruptibility of man…through farm animals. It also offers food for thought in terms of the power of words and speech- a topic we could use some reflection on today- as well as the ways education for all is critical in the fight for a fairer society.

Mrs. Dalloway – Virginia Woolf

So this one takes a while to get into, but once you’re in it, you’re in it. It’s a stream of consciousness with multiple points of view; turns out this is actually supposed to represent the fallible and often confusing passage of time despite the fact the novel takes place over the course of a day and a night. This is just one of the many themes of post-war society, as Woolf also tackles themes of PTSD, reintegration, and the meaning of belonging.
