Stan Laurel, born Arthur Stanley Jefferson, was the son of Arthur J. Jefferson, an actor-manager, and Madge Metcalfe, an actress in Jefferson’s troupe. Joining with Oliver Hardy as Laurel and Hardy in 1927, the duo became the first important comedy team in American film history.
