Pierre Corneille (1606–1684) was a French dramatist. He wrote both tragedies and comedies, and his first success came in 1636 with Le Cid, a tragicomedy which solidified Corneille’s reputation as a master of serious drama and established the genre known as French classical tragedy. His body of work includes more than twenty-five plays, many of which remain popular today.
