Jeffrey Moussaieff Masson is an American author who wrote many bestselling books about animals. He was professor of Sanskrit at the University of Toronto, where he also trained as a Freudian analyst, becoming, briefly, director of the Freud Archives. He has written books critical of psychoanalysis (The Assault on Truth, Final Analysis, and Against Therapy), psychiatry (A Dark Science), gurus (My Father’s Guru), and wolf children (Kaspar Hauser) before turning his attention to the emotional lives of animals. Masson lives on a beach outside Auckland with four cats; Benjy the failed guide dog; his wife, Leila (a pediatrician); and two sons, Manu and Ilan.
