Charlotte Mew (1869-1928) was a Victorian English poet writing on the cusp of modernism. Several of her poems are proto-modernist in form and gave her work a unique beauty and passion. Though largely forgotten today, she was esteemed by her literary peers who believed she approached poetic genius. She died tragically in 1928 after drinking Lysol during a bout of depression.
