Publisher Description

Lockwood, the new tenant of Thrushcross Grange on the bleak Yorkshire moors, is forced to seek shelter one night at Wuthering Heights, the home of his landlord. There he discovers the history of the tempestuous events that took place years before: of the intense passion between the foundling Heathcliff and Catherine Earnshaw, and her betrayal of him. As Heathcliff's bitterness and vengeance is now visited upon the next generation, their innocent heirs must struggle to escape the legacy of the past.

"Obviously fantastic, even though the story arc seems to me to feel a little lopsided, with almost as much falling as rising action -- although I still felt captivated throughout the book throughout. I found it very unique and interesting that the reader, just the narrator, hears about every single significant event through hearsay rather than direct observation or experience; I can greatly identify with Lockwood, who is a perplexed onlooker to the bizarre actions and cruelty of nearly every character in the book. Also, nearly every character in the book is imprisoned at some point, either by sickness, servitude, ignorance, or actual sequestration from society. My girlfriend once remarked that she thought growing up without a loving environment is more damaging than growing up without food or material means; there is probably no greater evidence for that world view than in the characters and story contained in this book. I was actually surprised at how candid, sarcastic, and funny the writing in the book was; probably ignorance on my part, but I thought the humor and irony contained in this type of writing was more modern, at least in how well it translates."

" Great if you can get through it. The English is very hard to understand. I never thought I'd say "I could hardly understand him due to his accent" when reading a book. It is written in an old English style that can be frustrating at times. I didn't give more stars because I don't care for the ending, all the drama for me, ended with Catherine. "

" I had to read this book for school and i would definitely say that it was one of the better book i had to read in school. It was not my favorite however because i felt like it was a bit hard to follow and some events happened too fast to really understand what went on. In the end I did like the book although while reading it I didn't like it as much. The second generation is better in my opinion. "

" The book that, once I reread it in college, I ABSOLUTELY LOVED. I hated this book as a sophomore in high school. But as a senior English major in college, suddenly it made so much sense. I still hated the characters, but oh the beauty of the book. "

" why its a classic - it is a well written victorian tragedy. why i didn't like it - it should have ended when Catherine dies. to drag on and on, i got tired of it. i found no sympathy with the characters, and I skipped around, wanting to be done. "
