"This is part of a series, and I do think reading the first title would make this easier to follow. There is a large cast and it can be a bit hard to keep track of them all. I thoroughly enjoyed the book and only wish I could do the same as Daine, enter animals' minds and communicate with them mentally! The problem was solved a bit too easily and tidily. But journey, not getting to the end was what was fun about this book. I don't think some of the drama where Daine demands a big favor from the Immortals was really necessary. On the other hand, it was also nice not to have to mourn the passing of a really cute character. I think that was what this book did the most for me: allowed me to forget reality and enter another world for a while in a quite convincing way. Daine is an attractive person and Pierce wisely makes sure she still has things to learn and improve on, such as acknowledging her prejudice against some nasty creatures. I'm looking forward to the next title in the series but won't get to it for a while."

" This is the second of The Immortals series featuring Daine, who was introduced in Wild Magic. For me this is the weakest book of the series, even the book by Pierce I like the least. I found the environmentalist/animal rights theme heavy handed and at times eye-roll worthy. Those kinds of themes are certainly present in all of Pierce's books, but this is the one where I found it nearly unbearable. That said, I first read these books as an adult on the recommendation of a friend who fell in love with them as a child. I'm sure if I had read these when I was in the targeted age of 12 to 16, I would have eaten up this tale of a girl who not only can talk to animals, she can shapeshift into one. And even I loved the next two books in the series, which have scenes I'd call cinematic and memorable quotes suitable for bumper stickers. And there were enjoyable bits here too, such as the dimension given to the Stormwings and "Kitten" the dragon. "

" i really liked this book, and the rest of the immortals. it put a across a good, if not slightly basic, survival story. it really brings the reader into the book and holds them though-out the series. ideal for fantasy lovers who are just getting in to the world of reading. "

" I'm actually rounding up in my star rating here; it's still my least favorite of all the Tortall books I read as a young adult, because it's pretty repetitive. Does have its moments though. "

" Not really a fan of this series. Daine's connection to animals is interesting but the Immortals are gross and weird. There is a little too much Immortal/animal time and not enough human relationship time in this book for my liking. "
