It is January, and Park Ranger Anna Pigeon is sent to Isle Royale in Lake Superior to learn about managing and understanding wolves, as her home base of Rocky Mountain National Park might soon have its own pack of the magnificent, much-maligned animals. She's lodging in the island's bunkhouse with the famed wolf study team, along with two scientists from Homeland Security, who are assessing the study with an eye to opening the park in the winters - an act that would effectively bring an end to the 50-year project - so that the area can be manned to secure the scrap of border with Canada.

Soon after Anna's arrival, the wolf packs under observation begin to behave in peculiar ways. Giant wolf prints are found, and Anna spies the form of a great wolf from a surveillance plane.

The discovery of wolf scat containing alien DNA leads the group to believe that perhaps a wolf/dog hybrid has been introduced to the island. When a female member of the team is savaged, Anna is convinced she is being stalked, and what was once a beautiful, idyllic refuge becomes a place of unnatural occurrences and danger beyond the ordinary.

Alone on an island without electricity or running water, with temperatures hovering around zero both day and night, Anna fights not only for the wolves but for her own survival as well. Download and start listening now!

" All I can say about this book is Wow! I thought I was a bit slow at first. Nevada does an excellent job of setting up the plot and the characters. I was waiting for the murder. The action came mid-book. Once I hit the murder, I couldn't put the book down. This is one of my favorite series. "

  • 3 out of 53 out of 53 out of 53 out of 53 out of 5 Shelley Glassman | 2/14/2014

" I liked this book, but it took a long time to get going. The premise was interesting, and I've always liked this series, but this wasn't my favorite. "

  • 5 out of 55 out of 55 out of 55 out of 55 out of 5 Maria | 2/9/2014

" Another wonderful tale, this time once more in Isle Royale National Park but in the dead of winter with wolves and moose, snow, skeds, ski-sleds, cross-country skiing, ice, backpacking, and getting close to nature - what more can you ask for? Throw in several unfortunate accidents and unexplained deaths and Anna's irrepressible ability to get into a fight to the death and you have Nevada Barr at her most enjoyable. "

" This is one of the best mysteries I've read and it had me on the edge of my seat the entire time. Glad Nevada Barr got out of her dark place and brought some more life to these characters. "

" The last two in the series have been pretty grim. Also, the villain was somewhat obvious. "

  • 3 out of 53 out of 53 out of 53 out of 53 out of 5 Kathy | 12/24/2013

" Nice to see the Isle Royale wolf study get so much attention, and Barr does her usual great job of building tension and putting Anna in positions where she has to duel with nature and the bad guys to stay alive. But somehow it didn't come as alive as her previous books. "

About the Author
Author Nevada Barr

Nevada Barr was born in the small western town of Yerington, Nevada, and raised on a mountain airport in the Sierras. Pushed out of the nest, she fell into theatre, receiving her BA in speech and drama and her MFA in acting before making the pilgrimage to New York City, then Minneapolis. For eighteen years she worked on stage, in commercials and industrial training films, and doing voiceovers for radio. During this time she became interested in the environmental movement and began working in National Parks across the country during the summers. Woven throughout these seemingly disparate careers was the written word. Nevada wrote and presented campfire stories, taught storytelling, and was a travel writer and restaurant critic. She has won both the Agatha and Anthony awards for best first mystery.
