"Quiet different to any other Koontz I've read, the first part of the book is like a crime novel free form any sort of 'horror' until the last chapter. This doesn't make it any less intresting tho. But where the story gets more Koontzlike is the second part of the book. You find a lot of answers to questions in this part, however it is somewhat predictable and you feel quiet sorry for the 'bad guy' in the book. This actually didn't have a bad ending, the visual imagery of 'the gates to hell' is pretty strong and makes me very glad I've never been forced into such a place."

" WHISPERS was not an easy book for me to get lost into. I didn't start to get into the story until about page 100. There was so much background story to process for each of the characters. However, Dean Koontz does such a marvelous job of creating tension and painting psychopath characters (Bruno Frye in this one) that I had to soldier on. The story is layered, detailed, and terrifying. I'm very glad I finished it. "
— Liz, 2/20/2014" I read this book first in 1980/81 when it came out - I vaguely remember seeing a tv commercial for it, which I thought was unusual at the time. I still have it - it was one of the scariest stories I had ever read. I read the next few Koontz novels, but gave up around the 5th or so book: Koontz was huge by then and the writing seemed to have changed. This is still my favourite. "
— Tammy, 2/19/2014" One of Koontz's best works. Not supernatural at all...and that's what makes it so creepy...the feasability of it! "
— Catherine, 2/18/2014" The start is a little rocky but Koontz eventually finds his stride. This book gives a nice and unexpected twist to a pretty common plot device and ends with an unforgettable scene that is sure to give every reader the creeps. "
— Elaine, 2/17/2014" Dean Koontz is always great, he is in his own little world just like Steven King... "
— Chuck, 2/11/2014" Listened to the audio book version. Very scary stuff. Creepy. Not good to listen to late at night while packing moving boxes. "
— Samantha, 2/8/2014" Good thriller, it was kind of slow at first. The bad guy got old though, not my favorite of Dean Koontz, but it was still worth it. "
— Matthew, 2/6/2014" This was my first Dean Koontz novel, so it will always have a place in my heart. It's creepy and a little off the wall, but overall a fun read. "
— Caitlin, 2/3/2014" Thrilling, spine-tingling, and sensual..........and with a very good twist. Not as good as the first two Koontz book I've read("Your Heart Belongs to Me" and I forgot the other one); nevertheless, a great book. Worth reading. And so much adjectives. :)) "
— Ron, 2/2/2014" Not too bad for an older Koontz book. Very adult and very predictable with good characters. Love the roaches. The whole (view spoiler)[twin thing was predictable (hide spoiler)] but overall it was a good read. "
— Alex, 1/31/2014" scariest page turner - a classic by the master of mystery/thrillers. you cannot figure out the twists and you can't put it down. Don't read this while home alone. "
— Adrianne, 1/28/2014" Definitely one of Koontz best novels. "
— Tonya, 1/25/2014" Genre: Horror. But the most scary thing about this book, and about alot of Kontz's early work (not so much the later stuff), is that it is entirely possible. The whole scenario could be acted out in your town. That's what I find so amazing about his earlier books, that they're so creepy, really give you the willies but there's nothing supernatural or out of this worldish about them, they could happen. Brilliant. "
— Helen, 1/23/2014" I went into this book blind thinking it was going to be about something totally different than it turned out to be. The characters endure much suffering and I actually ended up feeling sorry for the "bad guy" in this book. Disturbing and twisted, but still a good read. "
— Craig, 1/20/2014" Read and released on Bookcrossing.com in 2002. "
— Sue, 1/20/2014" Great suspence! One of the best authors around! "
— Danielle, 1/16/2014" A good read. But if you ask how it could be happening, there is only one answer. "
— Barry, 1/9/2014" Very cheesy but fun to read. "
— Tocotin, 1/2/2014" One of Koontz's better thrillers "
— Jenna, 12/28/2013" Disturbingly good book. Ive always liked Dean Koontz "
— Shannon, 12/26/2013" This was the first Dean Koontz book I ever read and couldn't put it down. He very quickly became one of my top 5 favourite authors :) "
— Micaela, 12/21/2013" first book i read by Dean and i have been hooked ever since "
— Kat, 12/8/2013" This book really dragged on too long! I had to force myself to finish it which I am glad I did because the ending was really quite good. Too bad the rest of it wasn't. "
— Kaja, 12/3/2013" Hilary, a hollywood writer, is stalked by a mad man, Bruno, who is alive, but dead at the same time..... "
— Debbie, 12/3/2013" "Fear shouts. Terror whispers." With a tag line like that I'm thinking it has to be good. "

— Sarah, 11/7/2013" Kept my attention and was very interesting. A little disappointed in the ending (wanted scarier) but overall really good! "
— Melissa, 10/24/2013" This one is good old classic Dean. He's definitely gone soft as of late and I think that if he just wrote one book a year instead of four or five, he'd still be putting out great books like this one. "
— Jeff, 10/18/2013" Dark and disturbing. Very good mystery. I liked the Freudian theme. Great love scenes. What a tormented villain! "
— Dany, 10/12/2013" Okay book, somewhat predictable. I was kind of annoyed at the moralizing treatment of Mrs. Yancy. "
— bbluekitty, 9/15/2013" This is one of the first books I ever read by Dean and though it might be a little twisted, it made me want to read more of his books. Definately recommend this one. I would really like to read it again but I have so many other books to read still. "
— Shayla, 8/5/2013" I thought this book was one of the strangest and scariest I had read. Love it !!!! "
— Tracie, 6/20/2013" This has to be one of the all time creepiest psychological thrillers. Whispers is the noise that he hears and when you find out what makes the noise you'll see why he was so crazy. "
— Kriscrowe, 5/8/2013" Great book i loved it! "
— Cindi, 1/17/2013" I read this book several years ago, but I loved it and still recommend it to anyone who is looking for a good tense/spooky read. Though I found it to take a minute to get going, I wound up devouring it in the space of a few hours. "
— Jen, 1/13/2013" Not one of Koontz's best but good. Not gory for those who avoid that type of thing, more of a psych/police thriller. "
— BJ, 11/6/2012" I read this book a long time ago. What I remember is that is scared the begesus out of me. I had never read a book like that before and soon I was reading a lot of his books. All early works though. "
— Carey, 10/28/2012" I could see some of the plot coming and was anxious for the characters to catch up, but otherwise it was a very good book. Disturbing is a given when reading Koontz. His craft is clear in his ability to craft the villain as the victim. "
— Tommy, 9/10/2012" Really liked it, until the end. Yet another book that made me feel like the author just got bored and wanted to end it and move on to something else. Ending was very fast, easy, and abrupt. "
— Lilly, 8/18/2012" Good, but I like his books with the remarkable dogs more! "
— Jess, 8/17/2012" Wow, the ending is so highly predictable that it's almost a relief that the climax is a whopping 3 pages long. This was not a good book. "
— MJ, 7/7/2012" This book seemed to be nothing but disturbing. Normally I love Koontz's writing but this didn't seem to have much of a plot. "
— Kaitlyn, 6/30/2012" Good stuff. I like stories about serial killers, and this one really dug into the mind of one. I appreciated the way Koontz focused on the bad guy in this novel, and I enjoyed it. "
— Paul, 6/28/2012" I have the hardback version of this. "
— Charles, 5/27/2012" Wow, the ending is so highly predictable that it's almost a relief that the climax is a whopping 3 pages long. This was not a good book. "

— Bonnie, 11/8/2011" I read this back in high school and it remained one of my favorite books for a long time. Not sure I would still give it that title but the explanation of what The Whispers are has stayed with me all this time. I was a huge horror fan then. "
— Nikki, 10/8/2011" Good, but I like his books with the remarkable dogs more! "
— Jess, 10/5/2011" it was good, although the a bit creepy. Didn't know it was about my PHoBia!!! otherwise I would NOT have read it. but luckily there were no pics!! "
— Minerva, 9/11/2011" I enjoyed the way Koontz revealed the Bruno confusion, the way he brought out the good side of the bad cop, and the romance between Hillary and her man. The whispers that were revealed were a bit lame and not his best, but the story overall kept me reading and a dedicated Koontz fan. "
— Shawnee, 9/10/2011" the book seemed to drag on quite a bit. I skipped a couple hundred pages because I just wanted to find out what happened. "
— Jennifer, 8/23/2011" Liked this alright. Not Koontz's best work, but still enjoyable to listen to. "
— Dalton, 8/4/2011" Die Story ist toll aber er häät sich ca 150 Seiten kürzer fassen können .. war zum teil einwenig langfädig .. "

— Mike, 7/14/2011" This was my first Koontz book. I read it when I was suffering from bronchitis in university. I didn't know what to expect and was pleasantly surprised. He became one of my favourites. "
— Mary, 7/9/2011" This was my introduction to this Author. For whatever reason-it has always stuck with me and even though by no means is this a classic book-at the time-it was a shocker and I couldn't turn the pages fast enough. Good read if you like the genre. "
— Robert, 7/8/2011" Having read the Dean Koonts biography, my experience reading Whispers was different than most because I already knew the truth about bad guy Bruno prior to finally reading it. "
— Brandon, 6/25/2011" Great story, lucid descriptions and prose, but a bit too long. "
— Brian, 6/12/2011" Great story, lucid descriptions and prose, but a bit too long. "
— Brian, 6/12/2011" Needs some major editing...The murderer is just horribly underdeveloped. After finishing the first chapter (which just dragged on and on), I gave up reading it and just wiki'ed how it ends. I am so glad I didn't torture myself any further and now know not to trust my Aunt's opinion on books.
"
— Tipsy, 6/2/2011" Needs some major editing...The murderer is just horribly underdeveloped. After finishing the first chapter (which just dragged on and on), I gave up reading it and just wiki'ed how it ends. I am so glad I didn't torture myself any further and now know not to trust my Aunt's opinion on books.
"
— Tipsy, 6/2/2011" Pffffff.... Thus book was OK. but near the end I could not care less for the ending. "
— Xlex, 5/30/2011" Pffffff.... Thus book was OK. but near the end I could not care less for the ending. "
— Xlex, 5/30/2011" This book did nothing for me. I thought the plot was stupid and the characters over the top. I've never read Koontz before and I doubt I do any time soon. "
— Kristin, 5/26/2011" Outdated and not one of Koontz best. It was OK. "
— Teresa, 5/12/2011" The bad guy turns out to be twins who were raised to be one person not two. "
— Jake, 5/6/2011" I really loved this book, the only real problem I had with it was the way it ended. The Ending could have been way more than what it was. Slightly disappointed "
— Stepfanie, 3/13/2011" was my first Koontz and I enjoyed that it was creepy without being gory. "
— April, 2/13/2011" Yeah, this one freaked me out too. Never have I felt sorry for the psycho until now. "
